I have XP Home on my little machine (400MHZ P11 system) with a Phillips DVD/CD-RW drive. I copied all my Uninstall files to a CD and all seemed to work as it should, but, I cannot see the data written to the CD. When I go to my computer it shows the D: drive and lists it as DVD/CD-RW (or something like that) but doesn't show the CD Label I gave the CD and when I explore the D: drive, I see nothing. When I click properties it says all available space is used (700 mb avail, 700 mb used).

Why can't I see the files written to the cd? When I look at the CD I can see the image is written there.......

    Please help me -

    Mitch

    Hi MitchellCooley,

Sounds like the write failed for some reason, and I'd suggest that you try again with a new CD, maybe a different brand.

After a lot of troubleshooting, and heartache I believe I discovered the problem. My DVD/CD-RW drive will not read the data discs I create, however when I hooked up my old cd-rom drive, I was able to see the data and access the files.

So, I guess I am going to have to go buy another ribbon cable and connect my cd-rom drive to my computer as well so I can see the data I write to CDs. That will be a pain in the neck - I really didn't want to have two CD drives on my computer - seems redundant doesn't it? But, that is where I am for now.

    Oh well....

    Rehi MitchellCooley,
That's a new one on me! However I've read that different lasers are used in the drives for reading and writing, so that could explain it I suppose, but then the writer shouldn't read any disk. :(

Anyway, thanks for the follow-up; actually, a new DVD writer (writes and reads CDs too) can be very inexpensive and is easily installed in most machines.

I should have known something was amiss when I couldn't upgrade my Win2k to XP using that drive. I had to remove the DVD/CD-RW and put my CD-ROM back in just to upgrade. I just figured one cannot boot from a RW drive. Maybe my "used" Phillips drive has a booboo somewhere......:)

Thanks for the link. I'll check 'em out

    Mitchell
