Just upgraded to XP for Win2K. Downloading Service Pack 2 as I type. Do I really need the Firewall, antivirus, etc that comes with Service Pack 2 if I am runing Sygate, AVG, Spybot, and Adaware?

No - but be aware that you should not run two firewalls due to possible conflicts. If you check in Security Centre under Firewall you should see that SP2 has recognised your firewall and turned off the XP one.

As for AV I was not aware that SP2 downloaded an AV program - unless things have changed, after all it is a long time since SP2 was released and I am not familiar with the current download. As with firewalls running two AV programs is not recommended. OK to have more than one installed, but only one running.

I would consider downloading Windows Defender (now an integral part of Vista) for real time monitoring against spyware, etc - unless you have the full version (paid) of AdAware. Continue to run AdAware & Spybot weekly - they often pick up things WD misses and of course Spybot immunises the system against a load of nasties. Add to that SpywareBlaster, works in conjunction with Spybot and blocks a whole lot more.

SP2 does not come with Antivirus.

I'd also like to add that Sygate has been discontinued (not sure if you're aware of this, because Symantec bought them out). If you want to continue using this firewall that's fine, but I prefer to use a product that is updated often.

Personally I like Comodo Personal Firewall. It's got a great inbound/outbound monitoring system, plus a host intrusion prevention system program.

Some users find this firewall difficult to manage though.

I took your advice and downloaded Comodo. Yep, it will take some getting use to and has a bit of a learning curve. Really didn't think about a firewall needing to be updated.....Sygate has been working so well. Tested it at GRC.COM form time to time and it was doing its job. Too bad Symantec had to buy out the competition.

I agree that the last free version of Sygate didn't need updating and was a quite capable firewall.
