Just don't know what happened. My system was fine until today. One of my daughter's friends brought over a flash drive to play music. I noticed this evening my hard drive was reading/writing constantly. Processor was at nearly 100%. I only have 128MB RAM on my 400Mhz system and it appears the system was using it all and then some.

I read through the threads and found one similar but didn't want to perform the tasks in it until I had some more advice.

I have included a Hijack this log and Silent Runners Log in this post. I ran AVG, SpyBot S&D, and XCleaner_Micro all returning no threats. I used EasyCleaner to check my registry and it found no invalid entries.

The system is somewhat slower during normal use, it is just when I try to log back on it takes nearly 20 minutes to bring up my desktop (it usually takes three to four minutes). I even tried to run it in safe mode but it still took an extremely long time to come up. I hope someone will have some ideas.

    Hijack This:

    Hi Mitchell.

I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary. Any idea what process is suckin' up CPUs? Do you have Process Explorer installed? If not, then do so and check out which processes are crippling your machine. It's a very handy app, I install it on every machine I touch.

Loaded ProcessExplorer. Seems Automatic Updates was doing all the r/w on the hard drive. Taking up over 20%. Turned them off.

LogOff takes about seven minutes then hangs with just my background showing. Restart took 14 minutes to get to useable desktop.

Have you run any system utilities to clean up things?

    Try these:
    System File Checker
    ChkDsk

It is odd tho, that up until now, the machine started quickly. And it's not like you have a ton of stuff running, because you don't.

Who knows? I am running Win 2000, will those two files work with my system? When I went to download it appeared they were for XP.

While I was at work I thought a lot about what has been going on with my system. I haven't had any real problems since you cleaned it up for me. but, I have noticed that I would lose my "connection" to the internet if my system was idle for a few minutes. I would get a message "working offline cannot connect; try again" And I read somewhere in one of the posts that if I had a direct connection to the internet I did not need the DNS Service. I only thought about this when I remembered when my system was booting up it would hang for several minutes at "preparing network connections ". So, on a whim I disabled DNS Service (what could it hurt - never hurts to try). I haven't rebooted yet because I am going to run those files and see what they come up with. Will post back......if my system comes up....to let you know what happened.

    Mitch

PS. Ran Chkdsk - system is clean. Ran sfc - replaced 4 files and errored out on three (could not read disk) I seem to have a bad spot on my CD (had a similar problem the last time we worked on my system). I emailed a friend who has Win2K to borrow his CD to run SFC again.

However, my system rebooted in less than four minutes. Normal as far as I know for the system speed and RAM.

    so far so good

Glad to hear all is good. I'll leave this thread open for a bit just in case.
