I am using XP home and IE7. About a week ago, I downloaded a batch of updates via Windows Update, and aparently all went well. All the time now I get the yellow update shield and when clicked it tells me to install KB923980 which it says is already downloaded. I have been to the list of $NTuninstall files in windows and uninstalled it, but the problem exists still. In my update history list, the update exists many times. How can I clear this and start again!

First, this has nothing do to with IE 7. You could well face the same problem with IE 6.

Please see my notes here: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=59599

Use what I called the long fix.

What is odd about this Hotfix is that it only involves the Netware Client for Windows, which you likely do not have. Why this is being pushed out by Windows Update is a mystery to me.

But the link I provide in the thread above will sort the issue.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Thank you Bill. I modified the registry as you suggested and WU is not nagging me any more! By the way, when you download an update, where is it stored on the hard Drive prior to the installation process?

In a temporary directory with a strange name, and partly in a fixed directory WUTEMP. XP will pick the drive with the most space.

    A typical entry:
    ae9d32ef19bdf43d1b

Which you are unliklely to mistake for anything else. If you see an entry left behind (they should be cleaned, but particularly if a removable drive is used it may not be) just delete the folder.
