I hope I have this in the right forum. I have spent the last hour trying to find info that addresses my problem and have had no sucess. I want to transfer some files and folders from my old computer - xp home - to my new computer - xp pro. I will not be keeping the old computer, so I am not trying to set up a network with an internet connection. In the past I have just connected the 2 computers with a null modem serial cable and used the files and settings tansfer wizard, but this is painfully slow. I purchased a crossover cable to speed things up, but have no option for this in FAST. Tried to set up a network, but it keeps telling me that I have no internet connection. I have no internet connection because the ethernet ports are being used by the crossover cable. Every article I have read keeps addressing sharing an internet connection. This is not what I want. Anyway - long story short - how do I transfer my files using a crossover cable. At the moment, both computers are on, connected to each other with the crossover cable, file sharing enabled, firewalls off, and guest accounts enabled. Still nothng. Any help?

    It is not that difficult!

If you use crossover cable, you need manually setup the IP address for both machine.

I give an example for you.

In your xp home side, set IP address as 192.168.1.1, the subnet mask will automatically show up.

In you xp pro side, set IP address as 192.168.1.2.

After you have done all above, then try to ping each other.

If you can ping successful, then do the rest, like sharing folder and copying files.

    Have a look at this:

    http://www.practicallynetworked.com/qa/qa20030213.shtml

If you use a router, connect to it via a normal network cable, and your IP address is configured automatically by the router: returning the TCP/IP settings to "Obtain an IP address automatically" will allow your system to use the internet again when you have finished transfering the files.

If you use a router, connect to it via a normal network cable, and your IP addresses have been set manually, make a note of them before you change them, and then change them back to their original settings when you have finished.

If you use a modem and connect to it via a USB cable: the changes you make to the network card to get network file sharing working should not affect your internet connection.

I do normally use a router, but disconnected it to be able to use the ethernet port for the crossover cable. I do not understand about changing the ip address as I thought this was used for iternet connections and I am not trying to do this at this time. When I want both computers on the internet, I just run and extra cable from the router to the new computer and it gets on line just fine, but doesn't detect the other computer. When I disconnect the router and use the ethernet ports (1 on the new computer and 1 on the old computer) for the crossover cable, the computers still don't detect each other. Maybe I am being dense, but I have never tried to do this before and it is not making any sense to me. Everybody says it is so easy. I have already read several articles about this including the link you gave, but it is not working.

Because when you used crossover cable for these two computers, you had to assign the IP addresses manually, otherwise, the network would not work.

Condidering your situation, I would like to help you step by step, but I have to leave for a meeting now, I will back in about 2 hours, if you wish, please come and we will go ahead with your issue.

Not meaning to belabour the point, but I DO NOT know how to assign ip #s. I guess that would be a starting point. I just thought I had to connect the computers. That is all I did when I used the null modem serial cable in the past and that is all I do to share the internet connection. Thought it would be the same with the crossover cable - guess not. Can someone tell me how to assign the ip#s and what they should be? Thanks.

    OK,

On desktop, right-click on "My Network Places ", then properties.

right-click on "Local Area network connection ", then properties.

Highlight "Internet Protocal(TCP/IP ", then click on 'properties' button

Select "Use the following IP address ", then input the ip address as "192.168.1.100 ", the subnet mask will show up as "255.255.255.0" automatically.

Then go to another XP system.

do the same, only the IP address should be different, say "192.168.1.101 "

    ?? What ( if anything ) am I missing here ??

I have 3 machines plugged into a Router and I have no need to do any cable swaping what-so-ever. All three machines can be ( and have been ) online at the same time.

But each machine must be set up individually to online. I myself had the other two off while working with one.

Billy Bob - the issue is NOT connecting to the internet, it is transfering files. The way I connect the second computer to the internet is not how I normally do it, but I have to switch from crossover cable to ethernet cable until I get the files transfered.
Jason - I have been off the internet for a while - using the ethernet ports for the crossover cable - trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. This is what has happened. I did figure out how to ping both computers and they read each other. A step in the right direction. It seems that now I can see the XP Pro C drive on the XP Home computer, but not the other way around and seeing the XP Home C drive on the XP Pro computer is what I really need. Confusing isn't it! Anyway, I think I have a problem on the Home computer. I can't seem to enable file and print sharing. Every time I check it, the the next time I look, it is unchecked again and when I try to share the C drive I get an error message that says something like " unable to share because the server service has not been started." I read some directions about enabling the file and print sharing which required clicking on an install button. You probably know what I am talking about, but if not just let me know. Anyway, when I tried to install it asked for a disk so I put the XP disk in, but keep getting the message that the info it needed was not on the disk. I gave up on that. Bottom line is that no matter what I try I can't get the Home C drive shared. I sure hope you have an answer. Since I did get the 2 computers to ping each other while they were connected via the crossover cable, should I still do the ip address thing from your last post? Thanks so much.

Actually, this is good enough if you only want to transfer files each other!

You can work on Windows XP home machine, copy files into the "XP pro C" drive to fulfill what you mentioned in the first post.

How dumb do I feel! Never thought of that. Will give it a try and post back later. Would still like to know why both drives can't see each other and what is going on with Home edition not being able to share the c drive. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Will let you know if I am able to transfer files. Thanks.

Oh, my friend, don't feel so bad. Everybody has that experience and it always happens.

Back to your question, if you really want solve that, could you please post more details. I know you has posted a lot of about it. However, it supposed no problem, but it did have a problem. It means, some strange things must behind it.Based on detail information, people here might give the right answers, otherwise, it might go through a marathon Q&As.

Anyway, I would like give some examples here:

In your past post, you said "unable to share because the server service has not been started ". Have you started the "server service" and tried again? If you don't know how to do that, follow this: On desktop, right-click on "my computer" then "manage ". In "computer management" window, expand "services and applications ", then click on "services ", you will find a lot of services list on right side of the window, go down until you find the service called "server ", then you know how to do the rest.

Then tell us what happened after you started the "server service ". If you like, you can tell as many as possible what you did in one post.

Oh My!!!! That did it! I didn't know what it meant about the "server service not started ". When I followed your instructions, I found that the server service was disabled. I can now share the C drive. Will let you know how the transfer of files goes. Thank you so much!

Just wanted to let you know that I have had success. I can see both C drives on both computers. The only problem remaining is this - I can open everything except the program files folder. When I am on the Pro computer and access the c drive of the Home computer, I get this error message when trying to open the program files folder. "Program files not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact administrator." I am the administrator on both computers, so I don't know what to do. There are some things in that file that I need. Any suggestions?

Yes, I do know about not being able to transfer programs, there are just a few settings I need from a couple of programs in the folder. Anyway I read the article that you supplied and it says in Pro that I have to disable file sharing first. But I need file sharing to be able to view the files to begin with. Is there another way?

This was written response to Pete's post. For Jason's post, I have read those articles also. I will try resetting permissions and see what happens.

Following the directions in the microsoft article, I disabled simple file sharing. To take ownership of the folder, the first step is to right click, select properties, and then click on the security tab. The security tab should be visable when simple file sharing is disabled. I have no security tab even though I did disable simple file sharing. I rebooted the computer thinking that would help, but it didn't. Any more help?

Just wanted to let you know that I found a work around for not being able to get into the program files folder. On the Home computer I opened up program files and just enabled sharing on the files I needed. Sure enough they showed up on the Pro computer. Don't really understand why that worked. If the Pro computer says I don't have permission to access the program files of the Home computer, then why it lets me have access to the individual files within that folder, I can't figure. Anyway, the important thing is that it worked. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.
