I've had my computer for a couple of years, it's an XP, and the speakers came with it. That's all good. But about a week ago, they just stopped playing. I've tried plugging and replugging them, but they just won't play. The first time, the icon on the toolbar (the little volume control) wasn't there, and the computer said it didn't have speakers. After unplugging and replugging, the icon is back (unmuted), but the speakers still won't actually play. They have power but they won't play. Help!!

Also, I can't do anything like trying them out on another computer. Don't have that access, sorry :(

To test the speakers, you can pull the connector slowly from the jack. You should hear static if the speakers are working. Can you try the speakers on another computer?

They are in the right connector (usually coloured green).

If you have headphones or earphones you could use those to test if there is a signal coming from the computer.

If there is no signal from the computer, you will most likely need to reset the audio drivers (unless a "mute" is turned on or the volume turned down in Volume Control).

Like yeh! I was gunna do a post on a sound problem also.....but was feeling a bit too embarrassed.

I have searched and searched through these posts and my own PC but still haven't won on this.

I did have sound but couldn't record....I eventually found a mute tick in relation to record but for the life of me I can't find again just where that was.
However as soon as the record problem was fixed I lost my sound/playback.

So while none of this helps you avato I am riding on the back of your posting and like you am trusting for a positive outcome.

    Mattman'

perhaps a bit of "instructive" information in relation to
might get us up and running.

    Thanking you

Thank you very much mattman!! I had disconnected them then put them back in the wrong port (yellow, not green :p ) . Fixing that and a combination of other things from another forum sorted it out! Thank you :)

avato, glad to hear you found it and everything is back on track :)

    Hello Roy66, I think I remember that one :)
Don't be embarrassed to admit a setback, one time I reset everything to the point of reinstalling Windows only to find that by crawling under my desk with a flashlight I had not pushed the speaker connector all the way in. It emphasized to me that you should check the basics first.
Maybe you could check your "basics ". If there are three connection points, one will Line out (speakers), another Line In and the other Mic In. You may want to check those carefully.

You say the microphone "popped in" while the speakers "popped out ". Sounds like a settings or software problem rather than a drivers problem.
The main volume/mute control should be in the System Tray (click on the "<" next to the time). There may be advanced settings for sound in Control Panel (use classic view).

Search for "volume" in Help and Support, it should lead you to the main volume controls.

The settings in the system tray are the major output, but advanced controls may be added by the software for the audio hardware...then there are controls in "players ", eg, Windows Media Player, Winamp, Realplayer. So there are several layers where the sound could be muted.

Rather than changing settings all over the place, change one setting at a time and test, then change it back if was not the cause. I have to remind myself of this continuously or risk having to backtrack and find the setting I made incorrectly. In Control Panel -> Sound there should be test sounds.

You could also try running the tests in dxdiag. Go to Start -> Run -> type dxdiag [Enter].

Let us know if any of those help.

    _________________________________________________________________

I've gone through just about all I can imagine.
The speakers are working, when I speak into the mike I get sound from the speakers.

This is a readout I got from Direct X Diagnostic under Sound..
Sound Test Result: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)
But remember, I did have sound ...but no mike, up until I unmuted the mike, so softwareis XP acceptable.
    Thanking you

Double click the speaker icon in the system tray. Click options>properties, select record and click ok.

To check to see if anything is muted, double click the speaker icon in the tray and see if any are muted (wave, midi, mic, etc.)

reset the audio drivers was suggested by Mattman but I am not familiar how to go about doing that.

I have gone into Device Manager and opened Sound, video and game controllers.

What I found was that in Legacy and Audio Drives and under Properties there was nothing there....Multimedia Device...no properties whereas in each of the others there is always something in Properties.

I loaded XP HOME CD to update drivers but came up with nothing.
I then ran "search" for Legacy Audio Drivers...nothing.
I then loaded the ATI driver CD that came with the PC...nothing?????

SO, How do I go about resetting the audio driver?

    Found the old post:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=43107

    Is it still the P4533?
Get all the relevant driver downloads from the link I posted. Install the chipset drivers first. If the downloads are not self-installing, just zip files full of compressed files, find the setup.exe file and run that. The Asus site is down for maintenance now so I cannot see if you have onboard graphics. If you have onboard graphics install those drivers after the chipset drivers. After that install the audio drivers (and after those are tested, update any other drivers). Reboot after each installation if you are not told to.

If the sound is still not working (Windows has not "found new hardware" and installed it) go to Device Manager and uninstall everything listed under "Sound" that seems related to the audio (like those that you mentioned). The hardware wizard will run when you reboot.

If the hardware wizard asks where to look for the drivers, click Browse and direct it to where you decompressed the zip files, you may have to direct it to a "Win XP" folder. The OK button button will highlight (not greyed out) when it finds driver installation information, although it may not be the information for your model.

There are many ways that Windows can identify and install drivers. If you come to a dead end, post back with your findings. I will download and look at the drivers.

    Mattman,

    All OK now.

Discovered that the drivers were on the M/B disk that came with the PC.

    THANKS
