    Hi,
    I am running XP Home.
The motherboard of my PC is an ASUS P4B533.
Generally speaking this PC gives me no problems to speak of other than the usual software problems that most of us encounter.

This MB has a hardware facility for Line in, Line out and Microphone Jack.
Line in and Line out are for the speakers...which are functioning OK which would indicate that this piece of hardware on the MB is functioning.

In spite of all this I am unable to RECORD via the Microphone and have used different mikes in making attempts and also installed different software in the vain hope of getting something to work.

As my attempts to overcome this problem have failedI thought that someone out there could have had similiar difficulties that they overcame or someone has some helpful clues.

    Thankyou
    Roy66
Stick with your PC over Easter..it's safer than being on the road.

Hi roy66, do a search of these forums for microphone. They mainly relate to reinstalling/upgrading drivers or checking settings. I had a look at the drivers available at ASUS, it looks like there is an upgrade for Win XP. May as well grab the CODEC file while you are there. You could try completely removing the current drivers (there should be quite a few different audio drivers listed under "sound" in the Device Manager).

    http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=P4B533&Type=All

    Could try emailing ASUS support.

Software? Uninstall and reinstall the Windows sound recorder.

In case it may be an actual hardware problem, try pulling out the jack while in microphone mode, see if there is static.

Most MoBo's with on-board sound have provisions for changing the function of various audio ports (plug holes) depending upon your intended use and/or speaker type. My suspicion is there is nothing wrong with your on-board sound that can't be fixed with a few well placed clicks of your mouse. Check out the device properties itself and its current configuration and if no relief there, go to sound in your control panel and have a look-see in there for hardware configuration. You can change the designated function of those ports - now the ball's back in your court - you just have to located where the changes can be made from.

    ;)

    Hi Roy,

This seems too obvious but is the Mic enabled under the Volume Control Panel under Recording (Not playback but under the recording control panel)?

Open the volume control panel, select Options, Prpoerties, then instead of choosing Playback, Choose Recording, and make sure the mic is checked. then click OK and make sure the Mic is selected.

I had a look at your motherboard manual and the following is a quote from it.
It would appear that Rockster2U could be right. I don't know if there's any settings in windows that will change the function of the mic jack or not. You'll have to check that out yourself. I did notice in the manual though that there's jumpers on the mother board that change the function of the mic jack. The default is for mic but it wouldn't hurt to look at them. You'll find the jumper settings for this on page 2-22 of your motherboard manual.

On checking through Microphone probs I came across this posting in 2003 by Arie Slob-Moderator to check on his outcome......

    Re: Microphone
    Arie,
From your post 14th. February 2003.........
    Hi,

Unfortunately no help from me. Just to let you know I have the same problem.

One day the Mic. was working, the next it dissapeared!

I've tried a system restore to take the system back to a date I knew the Mic. to be working, but that failed.

Installed the oldest & latest sound drivers for my on-board sound card (ASUS P4B533-E MB), all with no success.

Everything is working, except my microphone .......

I asked------------Did U ever get it working....I've been through all the basics but still not recording?

    roy66
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Nope...

What I did was hook up a spare drive & did a clean install... that showed that the hardware was working fine.

Been using my laptop when I needed a Mic. and a few months ago did a clean install of XP. That got it fixed...

Roy66, drivers? You may have reinstalled them, but have you uninstalled and reinstalled? I would look at the drivers program and see if it had an uninstall file. I would boot into Safe Mode and uninstall everything related to sound, in both Add/remove programs and Device Manager. When you reboot, don't let Windows automatically install the drivers, select the model from the "list of drivers" (make sure you know the model number). If the model is not listed and you cannot direct the wizard to the CD or downloaded files then Cancel out and run the installation program when you get to Windows, reboot and and direct the wizard to the correct drivers.

You should not have to reinstall your system just to straighten out some drivers (it would be a shame if you did).
