After aFlashing the BIOS with latest version 1004 of a Asus socket 370, Pentium III motherboard working with XP OS, on reboot all devices works but "New Hardware Found" keeps appearing on each reboot for devices such as HardDisk, CDRom.
Tried removing these devices on Device Manager, problem remained.
By the way the change of BIOS was prompted by the fact that my Apacer Flash Drive was not recognised by XP that kept trying to install drivers for this new device. Appreciate Help on this too.

    Waiting for the Saviour! :)

yeah I have this same problem. But just with my printer. I would like to get rid of the "found new hardware" window everytime i reboot. That would be nice.

    Hello Jay,

See if this MS kb article helps with this problem:

The New Hardware Wizard may detect the printer device after every restart of the computer

    Hello FuzMic,

Haven't found anything on your problem yet.

    Hello FuzMic,

Look at this thread here on the BBS: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=54266

Unfortunately, the poster never answered Matt.

    Some other questions to answer:

What XP version? Home - Pro

Are you running SP2? There are problems associated with SP2 wherein the device drivers have to be updated or updating from SP1 to SP2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555377/en-us causes a problem.

You might try also to disable the hardware Plug & Play Service: Start > Run > type services.msc > ok. That'll get you to XP's services and see what happens.

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks for yr help Charles:)
I was using WinXP Pro version with SP2. Anyway I just reinstalled them & the hardware problem disappeared. Thus it was not the BIOS update. I guese it may be registry problems or file corruption because not too long ago the Win Help was not functioning and I found that hh.exe was missing which I recopied, then help came back.
    Kind Regards

    Any Solutions Yet

    Hey Charles:

Any solution to the continually re-appearing "new hardware found" wizard?

I've had this problem ever since I upgraded a year ago to SP2. It keeps reappearing to say that my HP Laserjet 3100 printer has been found, but nothing I do prevents the wizard from reappearing.

I just tried that Microsoft suggestion to delete the registry key, but for some reason the registry wouldn't let me delete it.

Anyway, just wondering if you or anyone had any more ideas.

    Hi dkline,

Have you tried uninstalling the printer and re installing it?

    Updating drivers?

While the printer is un installed, then try deleting that reg key.

Thanks Charles. I'm nervous about uninstalling the printer since I'm not sure the software I have from HP is enough to reinstall it -- it was a gerry-rigged patch from HP that made it compatible with XP.

Maybe I should just live with it.

    Hi dkline,

Can't say I blame you - I never liked HP printers, the software running them is like Symantec's, creaky.

Okay, Charles, I have two possible solutions that I dug up thanks to Google, and I wanted to get your opinion before trying either of them.

    1) I downloaded the hplj3100.inf file and can direct the found new hardware wizard to install that. But I have no idea if this driver is old and not compatible with XP. In fact, I suspect it is since HP does not include any new drivers with its XP compatible software CD -- hence the problem with the found new hardware wizard constantly re-appearing at bootup. (In device manager, the Laserjet 3100 has a yellow alert saying no driver is currently installed, but as I mentioned before, the printer works fine.)

    2) Some folks recommend selecting a driver -- ANY driver, whether from HP or Agfa or anyone for any printer -- from the list in the found new hardware wizard and simply installing it. They claim the HP Laserjet 3100 will still work (after all, it doesn't have a driver installed now anyway), and that all you'll end up with is an extra printer in your control panel cue that you never use. But at least it'll enable the found new hardware wizard to think it successfully installed something and therefore it'll leave you alone and not pop up again at reboot.

What do you think? If I install, say, the 3100 driver and it turns out that it screws up my printer functions, can I uninstall it safely and cleanly and maybe even use system restore to go back to where I am now with my PC?

    Hi dkline,

Of the two alternatives, I like #2 better, it theoretically leaves the HP alone.

System Restore would undo this - you wouldn't have to uniunstall it.

If you have any question about whether System Restore is working, a way to test it:

    Create a manual restore point.

Take any executable file ( extention .exe) , and burn it out and/or move it to the My Documents folder and delete it from it's original location. SR does not monitor files in My Documents folder regardless of file type.

Then restore to the initial restore point created by the system; the deleted executable should be back in it's original location. Afterwards, you can delete the copy in My Documents

    Regards - Charles
