I've been using Mozilla 1.7.x on my desktop for a long time and I like the program very much. I was wondering if anyone is using SeaMonkey and to know what you think of it? It is appealing because it comes in zipped form and it sounds like it is just a newer version of Mozilla with a different name.
Can I treat it just like it is a newer version of Mozilla? Will it pick up my Mozilla profile if it is in the default location? Ramona, have you tried it?

I have Seamonkey1.0 installed, and Seamonkey1.5a nightly from unzipped files.
Seamonkey1.0 is so good that I uninstalled Mozilla1.7.12. And, the 1.5, though a=alpha, has been at that stage forever, and is, also, very stable.
I am in the habit of creating new profiles for each new major version of a related program. It may be more work, but the chances that one program will roll over and die, because of some remnants of the other, have never materialized this way. You cannot use the same profile with the other program still active. So, you have to decide. Get rid of Mozilla, and see how well Seamonkey will do, or create a dedicated profile for Seamonkey, into which you can paste the various files copied from Mozilla, like bookmarks.html, Inbox and Sent files, etc.
I have used, briefly, the Mozilla1.7.12 profile, with Seamonkey with no ill effect.

I have an old version of Shockwave. Should I discard it from the plugin file, or simply delete it, and than install a newer version. That and the default plugin are the only ones in the plugin folder.

    Bob,

Yes, I have SeaMonkey 1.0 installed, and find that it is a very stable browser. I would describe it as Mozilla with a Firefox engine. It is fast, much faster than Mozilla. If you haven't read this sticky: ATTN: Netscape 7 Users, you might want to check it out.

Definitely upgrade your Shockwave if you decide to switch to SeaMonkey. I would delete and then install the newer version.

Since I keep up to date with the plugins, all I did is to copy the plugins folder from one program, and paste it into another, thus replacing the old contents, if any. A few .dll files are not compatible, like the npmozax.dll for Active X, but most other files are fully interchangeable.

Just to refresh my memory since I do not do this very often, to use the zip file, I unzip it into a folder and double click on SeaMonkey.exe. This will search out my Mozilla profile which is in the default location. I then accept that profile and all my bookmarks, tabs, e-mail, etc. will be retained by SeaMonkey?

I do the following: 1.Unzip file; 2.Locate it and rename it, so that I know what what it is (I happen to have Seamonkey1.0 and 1.5a). 3. I copy the plugins folder from a similar program, and open the newly named folder, and paste the entire plugins folder, thus replacing the contents of one (I have to approve the copying). 4. Locate seamonkey.exe, and right click|send to desktop(shortcut).
Now, I don't have to look at the program folder until the next time.
    5.Rename the shortcut.
    6. If Mozilla, and Netscape are removed, I would just click on the shortcut, and you should be in business. Since SM1.0 is based on rv.1.8.0.1, I feel more confortable creating a new profile for it, getting the data from wherever I can.
It is vital, in my case, with two Seamonkey versions, although I have used the Mozilla profile.

Thanks for your help Westside. Will try it soon. I will not paste plugins folder because the shockwave is old and should be updated. I have no other plugin except for default.

Your memory serves you correctly. I think you will enjoy SeaMonkey especially if you prefer a suite. By using the Modern Theme you will think you are running either Mozilla or Netscape, or if you prefer the "Old" look then the Classic Theme will do the job.

This is a small Screen Shot of the program.

No matter what they say, the Seamonkey is an adorable bird, especially on the throbber, which is either falling off the branch, or, making a landing.
