I am running Win 98SE on both my laptop and a desktop. On the desktop the My Document shows up in the option box when I am asked to select an location for a download and in the folders in Explorer but does not on the laptop as I have to drill down in my C:\ drive to locate it, on the desktop it is located there also as well as where shown in the attached files. How do I get it to show up on my laptop as it does on the desktop?

Laptop: It seems at one time you may have made a selection to remove this Icon. To return it to your desktop go to C: /My Documents right click on the folder and drag it to the desktop, follow directions given, and it'll be placed on your desktop.
It should then be the same on both your Laptop and your PC.

The My Documents folder is already on the Desktop of both computers.

Interesting. I'll try to research further.

In the mean time click on Start/Windows Explorer/View Tab......Scroll thru all selections there and check and see if both, the PC and Laptop, are setup exactly alike.

Under the view tab both have the same items marked.

    quickshot, Interesting...

I have to apologize, I will not be able to pursue this further for a few days. I was just notified of a grave sickness in the family. All my projects have come to a halt for a while.

It seems like every I have read in the links pretains to Windows 2000 or XP. I am running Win 98SE on these two machines in question. Thanks for the come back though.

quickshot--The sfc /scannow suggestion will not work in Win 98, but some of the others might (such as TweakUI).
In Win98 the equivalent to sfc /scannow to repair corrupted system files is to use the System file Checker.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/185836/EN-US/
Do not, however, replace the User.exe, Gdi.exe, Setupx.dll or Krnl386.exe files if SFC suggests it.

    Passing thought ...

    Quickshot ...

Just a passing thought....some of what you seek was done by installing Internet Explorer 6.0 ....if the laptop has it, repair the installation..

Here are the registry keys ...so you check for yourself..

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main..

    Save Directory "C:\My Documents\ "

    and for the desktop ...

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

    Personnal "C:\My Documents\ "

    Cheers

Welshjim, I ran the sfc /scannow on both machines and came up with no errors or altered files.

Triger, I do have IE 6 on both machines and will check out the repair option and check to see if the reg. keys are intact. I use Mozilla 1.7.11 as my default on both.

    Thanks,

    quickshot

Did not have the Save Directory key but did have the Personal key. I will attempt to repair IE.

quickshot--Regrets, again, that suggestions based on what works in WinXP does not exist in Win98. You could try a Regedit|Edit|Find for DocsFolderPaths to see if that key exists in Win98.

There is a workaround that may help you. Rather than having to "drill down in my C:\ drive to locate" your My Documents folder, you can specify which directory your downloads will default to.

Open Regedit and go to the following key:

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Right click in the right hand pane and select New>String. Name it Download Directory (If Download Directory is already there, skip this step)

Now double click on your new string and give it a value of C:\My Documents or whatever the directory is you wish to save your downloads to.

Now each time you download it will default to the folder you have chosen.

Thanks for the reply, I have no trouble with most all my downloads as I put them in a folder "downloads" all zip and exe and such but when I download a txt or pdf or doc I would like to see My Documents list without having to drill down in the C: to get to it but do not want it as my main download folder for all files.

    quickshot--
Make a shortcut to that My Documents folder and put it in the Quick Launch part of your taskbar. Or, after creating a shortcut, right click on it|Properties|Shortcut tab|assign a keyboard short cut to it in the Shortcut Key line. (You put your cursor in the Shortcut Key line, type the Key you want to assign (such as D) , and Windows automatically creates a keyboard shortcut Control+Alt+D.) You can then delete the actual shortcut you just created.
