Glad to hear that you have solved one problem :)

I'll probably be around this weekend, but what you really need is a solution to the nail.exe problem.

    Good luck :D

You can get rid of the message about Nail.Exe missing by opening HJT, and removing this item.

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Mark, thanks....for some reason I was thinking I couldn't run HJT in Safe Mode, but it appears you can. I was able to go in and just delete the Nail.exe file and get my DVR back up and running. Thanks!

Ok, now that I'm out of panic mode I can poke around some more. I'll have to read up on HJT...but I may be back with a question or two.

    Thanks for the help guys,
    Jeff :)

    Read this thread nail.exe, Aurora?

Markp62 gave the accepted method of dealing with this infestation .
Note that you need to run the nail fix program as well as eliminate multiple entries.

Regarding your loss of serial port connectivity to your bar code scanner. I think that can be traced directly to system works. These registry fixer tools work by having a data base of expected entries for expected programs. If they find something not in their list, it is called an error or invalid entry. They fix these by deleting them. I strongly advise against ever just letting it fix what it finds. Check each entry and make sure it is a real problem. If you are lucky, it made a backup of what it deleted which you can restore.
You may want to try uninstalling all the software and drivers for this device and doing a clean install and hoping that it solves the problem.

Thanks oshwyn5, I will check out that link. I do still have a couple bugs that keep reappearing almost daily....

    http://www.jeffny.com/misc/IMG_4910se.JPG
(sorry, my USB keyboard doesn't have a PrintScreen key to do a screen capture)

I am unsure if the serial port is now working or not in this machine, the problem may have been in the P370 bar code scanner I just had work done on under warranty. I had the same "serial port" problem on another machine until I reset the default values in the bar code scanner....ie I think the problem was the scanner, not serial port (both my scanners and cradles are currently in use so I can't test that theory...)

I got a little side tracked the past few days, but I do need to completely rid this PC of all "infections ". I'm also trying to figure out where to put an addithing 500GB hard drive....I want both the current 250GB drive and new 500GB drive to have fans on them for cooling because they run 24/7 recording video from security cameras......are there brackets you can buy for a case like this one?:

    http://www.jeffny.com/misc/IMG_4894s.JPG
    http://www.jeffny.com/misc/IMG_4897se.JPG

Oh, and for some reason I now can not burn CDR's (this was working just a week or two ago)....but that issue will have to wait. It says the disk or media is bad even before it starts to write to a CDR disk, even though I tried a couple different disks and the same disks worked fine in another machine.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    "F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
    "

Note if you edit this manually in system.ini file you will find
    Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

You just want to delete the C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
bit. You want to have Shell=Explorer.exe or windows will not have a gui interface.

OK - the links are fine now. I'm sure that oshwyn5 will drop in on this thread again, but my stopgap advice would be to download, install and immediately update Spybot (through Quicklinks in my signature) and select the Immunise feature to give a base level of permanent protection and for a higher level of permanent protection download SpywareBlaster, immediately update and Enable all protection. Spyware Blaster is not a scanner, but provides a degree of permanent protection against intrusions. It should be updated every 7 - 10 days.

Fix the problems using MSAS, but if the critters insist on returning another HJT log would be in order.

I see that the PC in question is rack mounting - not familiar with those cases. If there is no obvious place for an additional drive then the following solution may do the trick ....

It seems from the second image you posted that there is a space (lower left og the picture) where the casing is bare. I ran across a similar situation a while ago with a tower with no spare mounting bays - my solution was to purchase a plastic drive tray (the sort that allow a 3 1/2" drive to be fitted into a 5 1/4" bay) and to attach it to the floor of the tower with double sided sticky pads - worked great!

I also have a fan setup such as you picture on one of my drives and it certainly reduces the operating temperature.

I was just scanning through this post and saw the above.

    Question on it .

Is it saying that you have one large HD all in one partition ?

If so, you made a mistake that many ( TOO MANY ) users make.

I honestly feel ( and always have done ) that the HD should be in no less than two ( 2 ) partitions. One samller size one for the OS and the other(s) for storage.

A member of my own Family learned the hard way too. Something went wrong and she was forced to format and lost YEARS of pictures.

Another good idea is to keep thing backed up on a CD. Which in your case I think might be a good idea. And then repartiton/format the HD and then put the Videos etc. back on a partition other than C:

In other words keep the OS and other software/data separated.

OK. I will quit rambling now.

Pete, thanks for the additional information. I will look for that software (in the next day or so...). And I'll look around for a similar drive tray. I'm sure someone on the web has something. The 250GB and 500GB will both fit now, just not with both their fans on...

BillyBob, yes, the 250GB (about 233GB formatted) drive in the DVR PC has two partitions. I have about 10GB for the C: drive (with XP on it) and 223GB on the D: (for the video). The new 500GB drive I may leave as one big partition because it is only to be used for video storage. I currently have 7 security cameras. What's nice about this Jupiter Callisto is that you can set it to record only when there is motion. So I can currently get about 4 months of recording time (using a "lossless" MJPEG format) on the 250GB drive! The latest model Callisto uses MPEG4 hardware compression which probably yields even greater capacity. I am currently in the process of adding two more cameras (they just need to be powered up and focused)...and will eventually use all 16 video ports on the Callisto. So the 500GB will give me a lot more recording time/capacity.

Anyway, yes, I do format most all my drives with at least two partions. I had planned on installing XP on both partition but then read there were "issues" with doing that (don't ask me now what they were...). As I mentioned, I'm more of a Mac guy than PC guy. So I ended up with XP on just one partition...maybe if I had more experiance in the Windows world it'd be different. Usually I end up here looking for help when I need some, and so far you guys have been here to help me out :) Thanks again by the way... :)

On my desk I have an 8 port IOGear MiniView Ultra+ KVM (supports both USB and PS2 keyboard/mouse connections) which connects to the Jupiter Callisto PC, two Duel Processor G4 database servers, a single processor G4 server (for access to prior years data and in case one of the DP machines goes down) and my trusty (7 year) old Beige G3 Mac which has a 4.5GB SCSI drive (1 partion) and a 40GB ATA drive (with 3 partitions). The SCSI and two partitions on the ATA have OS 9 installed. So if either drive starts acting up I can boot from the other (or CDROM drive) and run utilities. I also run Retrospect to back up my machine and other machines on the office network nightly (...I should be more vigiliant about backing up my machine at home though). I had planned on installing OS X on one of the ATA partions on my Beige G3 but doubt I will now. The G4's all have two partions and can run either OS 9 or OS X when I want, but I think my G3 will be running only OS 9 until I quit using it. I am currently NOT a big fan of OS X (having to work on my Dads OS X PowerBook a few times left a bad taste in my mouth...). OS 9 is still finnnneeee :)

What's nice is that this stuff is getting so cheap, now you can buy massive hard drives for a couple hundred bucks....I even just bought a 24 port Asante 10/100 switch for $66 bucks! Even used Beige G3 Macs are going for only $10 bucks on ebay now! I just bought a couple for additional use and spares...

Thanks...sorry if I rambled on a bit here...
    Jeff :)

If that is the case then you should be able to format C: without losing any of the Videos.

You will more than likely need to reinstall the software for it but you should not lose the video files themselves if they are indeed on D:

BTW. In your case I hope you do have the required software to reinstall the video program stored on other than C: On a CD is THE BEST place for the install program. I found that out myself. THE HARD way when I GOOFED when downloading a program. I did not watch carefully as to where it was being downloaded and it went to C: instead of H:.

    Hi All,

Well, I still can't get rid of this:
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

....it keeps coming back! I'd like about five minuets in a room with the anti-social geek creep that created this. Most geeks, like myself, use their power for good...but this guy has some bad karma coming!!!

    oshwyn5 points to:
"Read this thread nail.exe, Aurora? "
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=46109

....but I run the Nailfix.Zip app and nothing happens. Does anyone have instructions on how to use it? Do you run it then use HJT again remove nail.exe again? I don't understand what to do with Nailfix.Zip....???

Why can't any of the spyware apps kill this nail.exe? I now have about FIVE, all updated to latest versions, and none can get rid of this nail.exe!

Does anyone know if Grisoft is any good? One person told me it worked where all others failed.
    http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/Get+AVG+FREE/lng/us/tpl/v5

    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

Reboot into Safe Mode, and run Nailfix.Cmd, make sure Process.Exe is with it.
That thread has a link to ewido, which is good for a cleanup.

You could get as many answers to that as you have had hot dinners - and to the question 'Which is the best antivirus?' :D See this thread ....

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=44130&highlight=Antivirus

Seriously, though, AVGFree is very competant and is well recommended on this Board- along with several others. As all antivirus software depends entirely on it's detection engine and the associated virus definitions there will always be the case that one will perform better than others under a specific set of circumstances at a given time. The same is true of antispyware software.

Ok, I finally ran Nailfix.cmd.....now when I restart XP it says it can't find "C:/Programfiles/Nail.exe" (or something like that) ....then XP keeps shutting off the computer! I knew this was going to happen....that's why I kept putting off running it.

Oh, and if you start up in "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and you shut the command prompt window is there any way to open it again??? I couldn't find a way. I finally had to just boot in "Safe Mode" and doubleclick the Nailfix app....I have forgoten the DOS commands to navigate directories about 20 years ago....

So I guess Nailfix.cmd just deletes the Nail.exe without updateing any registeries?? Beautiful.

Why aren't there any instructions with the Nailfix app on how to use it? Anyone know how get XP to run again?

    Thanks

.....Ok, I started up in Safe Mode again and ran HiJackThis and checked the Nail.exe to be removed. That seems to have done it. It just wasn't clear to me that had to be done too.
