    Hey all,

Not sure why this is happening, but when I try to play a .MPG or . MPEG file, WMP10 treats it as an audio file (it will put in the title bar: "Song: <movie name> ) It doesnt show any video and for that matter, it doesnt play audio...it kinda just lags there.

    Please help!

Where is this mpg located? Could this be dvd related? Do you have a dvd and if so is the dvd player software loaded with the decoder installed? What is the media players address bar thingy indicating that is doing while trying to play this? Have you tried another player? What does a right click on the mpg file say its properties are? Is it just this mpg or all mpg's your having a problem with?

This Guide to mpeg playing in wmp may be helpful:
    http://msmvps.com/chrisl/articles/10633.aspx

video inspector: (works like gspot and will identify a video files format and the needed codecs).
    http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/5041p1.html

    Gspot: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/:
    From the Author :
Video codec identification utility - identifies which video codec and audio compression method is used on .avi files, whether the matching codec is installed, and more.
    Features :
Determines which video codec an AVI file uses
Determines what audio encoding method the file uses
Determines what codecs you have installed, and whether you have the one needed
Up-to-date database of over 200 codecs, including the latest DivX 5 and XVID systems
Shows reported audio bitrate and calculates video bitrate
Reports if the file is truncated, and how many bytes are missing. Great for downloaders.
Identifies MPG, MPEG, MOV, WMA, WMV, ASF or OGG/OGM if an unknown non-AVI file is examined.
Shows RIFF INFO (title, etc) if present, including hidden ASCII in the "JUNK" field
Easy to use ( "File > Load" and you're done)
Microscopic footprint - download size only 29KB
    Free for personal use

Here's some sample mpg1's you can try from the net. Tey are wmp standard and should play. They are not a test for mpeg2 (dvd)or mpeg4 (Tv, I believe). You will have it give mediaplayer a chance to download the entire video and then the audio to cache before playing. Wait for the play bar to be green all the way across and when it returns to the start position (will do so when the entire file is cached) then you hit play:
    http://people.netscape.com/danielg/hawaii/clips.html
They're dumb clips, offered not for content but as a trial/test. They were the fist ones I came to and grabbed on a search. I think there from someone's vacation.

The point is there are many types of mpg/mpegs. Some wmp can play with it's standard built in plugins/codecs and others require additional plugins/codecs. Some of these come bundled with other software/players, multimedia/editors or codec packages.

Second thing to consider is if this is a file located on the web. With all the security changes Microsoft has made that effect wmp, I have to wonder if this can't be a factor.

Third thing to consider is the options/settings within wmp it's self. Many of these that are meant to guard and implement copywrite protections effect whether wmp's ability or willingness to play such. It may also cause problems if to many of the bells and whistles are turned on. Particularly if these involve looking for and downloading information off of the net.

    ----------------
My heart goes out to you and I'm feeling your frustration. Now a days with all the ripping/burning, sharing and downloading of such. It's beginning to take a masters degree to determine if this is a standard file or some ripped/converted thing. You can't even trust the fact that an extension on such a file truly reflects what the file is. The problem with that is wmp determines how to play the file (plus a few encoded factors) based on this.

WMP is a real hard application to address issues with on another's computer. So much of the program is based on that particular system/setup and users settings/preferences and hardware/software devices. There's just to many factors to check and consider. What works on ones persons problem will not work on another. It's enough to drive anybody crazy.... :) (Phewww... I feel a little better after venting. WMP and myself have duked it out on many an occasion. I still have bruises and bad feelings. So far I've managed to win but in many cases this has taken days and I wind up scratching my head unsure of what I did that made it work. It all becomes of blur.)

    -----------------
A googles list that you may wish to browse through to see if something sounds interesting or strikes a bell:
    http://www.google.com/search?source...2005-15,GGLD:en&q=site:www.microsoft.com+mpeg

I'll help (as in you and I) by having a look through these, as time permits and if something concrete comes up, I will add it to the post. No guarantees.

^^^^update.... Sheesh! Once I actually started clicking on the links I could see that the above google list is awful. It's full of irrelevant and repeated hits. This list will have to be whittled down using better keyword filters. I'll get back to it sooner or later.
