Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool update has downloaded and installed it's self at least 10 times! my update history says each one was successful. They come each day.I truly hope that I did not break any posting rules I posted my new thread in window XP as I saw other updating problems in this forum and have a XP. A search did not reveal any duplicates of my problem so I hope a new thread was O.K.I also hope my choice of a title was meaningful but not with too many words. I truly am a rule follower so if I might need some guidance from ADMIN thats O.K. with me Lenny Chowns

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is a monthly update tool that only scans your pc. It doesn't actually install anything. Once scanned you "shouldn't" be prompted to run it again.

Yes I understand that but my automatic windows update is getting this same update 2 or 3 time a day now, It downloads it and is filling up my Installation History very fast. Will I turn off automatic update for windows and/or block that one update? Then just check for updats manually? If it is only used once a month should it be comming so many times? Each download say that it was sucessfull. Thanks Lenny

    KB890830 Microsoft update

I guess that I will need to become a little more diligent when using the search process tool? (Hopefully proficiency will develop with time and use?) After posting what I thought was a unique problem.I noticed that a number of related postings appeared and were listed at the end of the thread.( Of course they do not appear until after I have posted my problem.) I saw that one was a problem titled "windows updates" mojo13 stated that he had a problem that was virtually the same as my problem?

On Feb.16/2004 he complained that he had 6 of the same update KB826939 all successfully downloaded and installed on his computer? Were I had 12 of the same update KB890830 successfully downloaded and installed on my computer and they were still coming 2 or 3 a day? Back then a number of person tried to help but at thread post #22 the problem was still not resolved and it looks like the thread was closed, mojo13 said that he did a few adjustments and would have to work around the problem.Well I have come to the same conclusion (for now), I have turned OFF the auto update.

Now it only notifies me if any new Microsoft updates become available to install, if I choose to. I have also refused or hid the last notice of update # KB890830. I have though set up a shortcut on my desktop to call up the latest (MICROSOFT MALICIOUS SOFTWARE REMOVAL TOOL) download web page and can run this program whenever I want to, and always be sure to have the latest version so when I run spybot I just take another few minutes and run this made up program too. I have been in contact with Microsoft to see if they might help their correspondence with is as follows:

    Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

This tool checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps to remove the infection if it is found (3/8/2005).

My computer now has 10 copies of this update they come every day! My history says that all 10 have downloaded and installed sucessfully is this going to continue?

Leonard, I just noticed something rather strange about KB890830. It probably has nothing to do with your problem but it is worth passing along.

I used RegSeeker to search for KB890830 and it found only one instance at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\BITS\Security

When I went to that Key, there was no indication of KB890830 nor any other HotPatches, just a default string with no value data.

I would appreciate hearing anyone else's results when doing this same search. I doubt it's a bug in RegSeeker but how can the value string not be visible? Very odd.

Update: This morning the strange search results problem seems to have cured itself. The search for KB890830 finds nothing now. Go figure. I gotta believe it's a RegSeeker bug now since I conducted some searches for other words last night and got the same strange results - the search showed hits but the strings weren't there.

Well I did as you asked! ran a search I found 5 entries! I tried to copy to paste (no go) I was called away so I closed the program. I obtained a pen to record the search location (all 5 were the same) I ran the search again? Guess what? they were gone and no where to be found! On the other hand I am rather new to (REGSEEKER) and can not seem to find much" how to info" can I safely delete the saved log from cleanings? As since I removed them from my Registry no bad things have happened.P.S. only removed the Green entries and a few ACTIVE X. Thanks Leonard Lenny loony

I never trust any Registry cleaner. Frankly, I think cleaning the Registry is a waste of time except on those rare occasions where you have definite symptoms that indicate that you might benefit from it. Even then it's risky and questionable at best.

The only reason I ever use one is to locate some data string to see if it might relate to someone's problem, like in your case. In this case, it seems to be less than useful even for that purpose. ;) That's why I posted my findings.

Thank you for your advice. I think that I will keep it, as a tool application, but will stop cleaning the Reg regularly as I have been. Lenny

We shall be working to resolve this issue through the course of the case. If I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to let me know.

I have worked out a few steps for you to complete and would appreciate your time and efforts in trying the suggestions and providing me with the result of the same at your earliest convenience.

    Suggestion 1:

    *************

    1. Open Internet Explorer and then click on "Tools" menu and click "Internet Options ",

    2. Click on "Security" tab and click to select the "Internet" zone and then click "Custom Level" button,

    3. Scroll down to "ActiveX controls and plug-ins" section and ensure that the following options are set to "Enable ". If they are not, click on the radio button next to "Enable ".

    Download signed ActiveX Controls

    Run ActiveX Controls and plug-ins

Script ActiveX Controls marked safe for scripting

    4. Now scroll down again till you see the section, "Scripting" and enable the option for "Active scripting ".

If our issue with Windows Update Site continues then please proceed to the next set of suggestions.

    Suggestion 2:

    *************

We will RESET Background Intelligent Transfer Service and the Automatic Updates service.

    1. Click Start --> select Run. In the Run box, type services.msc Click OK

    2. Find the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Right-click on it and select Properties

    3. Click on Stop and then again click on Start. In the Startup Type list, make sure that "Automatic" is selected. Click OK

    4. Similarly find Automatic Updates service. Right-click on it and select Properties

    5. Click on Stop and then again click on Start. In the Startup Type list, make sure that "Automatic" is selected. Click OK

    6. Close the Services window

[Please note that if the service is already started the "Start" button will be grayed out. In this case "Stop" the service and then "Start" it again. On the other hand if the service is not running, the "Stop" button will be grayed out. In this case "Start" the service]

Once you have reset the two services, please access the windows update site and see if the issue is resolved. If the issue persists, please try the next suggestion.

    Suggestion 3:

    *************

    1. Quit all programs that are running.

    2. Click Start, and then click Run.

    3. Type "regsvr32 wuapi.dll" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.

    4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in wuapi.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

Repeat inputting the following commands and click OK after each command.

    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

    regsvr32 wucltui.dll

    regsvr32 wups.dll

    regsvr32 wuweb.dll

    Regsvr32 _jscript.dll

    Regsvr32 atl.dll

    Regsvr32 msxml3.dll

    Regsvr32 softpub.dll

    Regsvr32 Mssip32.dll

    Regsvr32 Initpki.dll

If the issue still occurs, please send me the "WindowsUpdate.log" file for further research.

The file is located in C:\WINDOWS

    Please send it to v-30kzha@mssupport.microsoft.com

Please take your time in trying my suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or there are any questions about the above steps, please do not hesitate to let me know. I will be glad to help.

I look forward to your reply.

Thanks for posting your Iliad Lenny. It will no doubt help others in the same fix that don't have free access to MS support. This is the icing on the cake!

This has turned out to be a very interesting thread for resolving "sticky" Windows Update download notifications.

From my experience, the latest Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is not the only troublesome download to cause this type of problem. Prior to reading this thread, I had simply run the full Windows Update one more time, (even though the fix had been applied) and I was expecting a zero response. This seemed to re-align the Automatic Downloads base position, where it would remember it had applied the fix. A reboot was nearly always necessary after the full Windows Update to finally tame the Automatic Downloader to behave itself. If I remember rightly, with the latest Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool 1.2 it still took a further 10 minters after rebooting for the system tray download icon to go away.

Clearly, there should be (and appears to be) some relationship between the full Windows Update and the background downloader. The above "ritual" based on a crude hypothesis seems to have helped me so far - but for how much longer?

Thanks to everyone who has contributed before me.

I wonder if this fix is specific to all repetitious notices from Windows Updates or only for the Malicious Software Update. Reading it, I would think it would apply to all.
Does anyone else have any thoughts?
P.S. Loonychoons--Most kind of you to share.

    To All

I found just one mistake {that has been resolved } in the fix from Microsoft. Under suggestion # 3 the sixth .dll is quoted wrong there should not be any "_" and it should read( Regsvr32 jscript.dll ) P.S. Can the original post or version be corrected? It does not have an edit choice listed. But if someone printed or used this as a guide it would have a mistake in it.Would any of you more knowledgeable persons know if this could be accomplished? Thanks Lenny Chowns

There should be an Edit button at the bottom right of the post.

I'd be happy to edit it for you but would it need changing in two places?

First let me apologize for spelling your name wrong in the past { I spelt it (newet) Sorry} next the only posts that I seem to have the means or ability to EDIT is the last one that I posted. All the others only have only a QUOTE button in the bottom right. Hey but what do I know but maybe because you are STAFF you may have both a EDIT & QUOTE button in the lower right of all posts? If you can would you then please correct that same posting? Also you stated that there was two mistakes, But try a I will, I can only understand and see the one that I mentioned? I am sure that it is there though so please fix up both. Thanks Lenny

Thanks for the info! I thought that there probably was a rule kicking around something like that? From what newt said I was sure that he (having an ORANGE title) that he could edit postings! I am not sure what you (GREEN guys are allowed to do? Us (BLUE people) Should just be thankful to be able to post and be tolerated? HA! HA! HA! but seriously are there any rules around these questions written down anywhere? Also what does I mean to be stepped on, or stepping on someone? I saw it mentioned in some of the posts? Well Thanks Again -- Lenny

    loonychoons--
I am not sure there is a place where all the rules, etc. are written. Two pages that have some of them are
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/faq.php?faq=vb_faq
(You can search the FAQ's. Had you done so for "Edit" you would have found this
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/faq.php?s=&do=search&q=edit&match=all&titlesonly=0 )
    and
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/rules.php
As far as "stepping on ", I am not sure to what you refer. I have never seen anything discourteous in your posts. Can you direct me to the instance?

And I never did understand Newt's comment about a change needed in the directions concerning "regsvr32 wuapi.dll ". Perhaps your post will remind him about the underscore, and we will learn what he thinks should be changed concerning wuapi. Of course it could be he did change whatever was wrong with wuapi.dll, before most of us saw it, but forgot about the underscore.
