    Running XP pro sp2

I recently aquired a few viruses and finally got them all cleaned out. During the cleaning process I had to delete the infected files to eliminate the viruses (my inbox). I since have reinstalled netscape 7.2 and have had the following problems.

1). Netscape would not start - problem resolved (Thanx bbs)

2).POP service disabled message when I check my webmail at a non-local web hosting service. I can check and recieve my ISP mail and my netscape mail just fine. I also can check my website mail via another computer running win 2k and netscape 7.0. It appears to only be on my laptop that I can no longer check my mail.

    I have done the following:

Verified with my Hosting Company (Jumpline.com) that POP service is opperating (must be in order to check via another computor)

Uninstalled all versions of netscape, mozilla, etc
Cleaned the local drives of all directories and files relating to these browsers
Removed all references to these browsers in the registry
    Restarted computor
Re-installed Netscape 6 (mail and browser worked fine)
Upgraded to netscape 7.2 and pop service disabled message appears

I started again at the beginning and completed all steps with a clean install directly to 7.2

I get the pop service disabled

    Any recomendations?

    Welcome to the Forum, JweSLC!

    Hi JweSLC,

Your ISP appears to be a Web Hosting Provider, is this correct? I don't have a clue as to how you have set up your account or what type of account you have. I did go to the Customer Support page, but there are so many options that I was unable to find anything other than an email setup for Netscape Communicator, which is long since defunct.

My advice at this point, and considering that you had to set up from scratch from Netscape 6 to Netscape 7.2, and then again with Netscape 7.2, would be to create a new Profile. Netscape 7.2 is a long way from Netscape 6... You can follow this guideline: Creating a New Profile which lays out the process step by step.

You can try, first, the option used by Skeeter (read the final post). http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=35399
You may have to go to the hard drive, and rt.click|copy the old Inbox, and right click|Paste, and then Rename to something other than Inbox, right click on the renamed Inbox, and Paste into the new account. This wil avoid overwriting of the new Inbox. However, if you Inbox file was deleted, forget it, all your old data is lost. Are you using Norton AV and scanning your mail?
My recommendation: 1. Don't use Norton
    2. Unless you opened an attachment, just delete the e-mail.
    3. Don't open suspicious attachments. Among them are Mail Daemon e-mails with attachments which you "allegedly" sent. Those are fake, and they want to trick you into opening them. Others are are attachment from someone you never heard of. The trickiest are from people that you know. I never open those, if they are out of character. In almost all cases a Outlook Express address book was raided.
    4. Don't open attachments(write that down 100 times!).

Yes, Jumpline is my web and mail hosting service. I have the standard mail product that they offer. Even thought the Netscape setup procedure is not current, the settings are basically the same as shown.

My solution (has worked so far) was to remove all netscape related software, registry keys , etc and do a fresh install of netscape 7.0. All mailboxes are currently working. I am not sure if there was a key that was previously missed in prior installation attempts. I did not try to install 7.0 previously.

I did however save my mail folders from previous installs, and, although tedious, used windows explorer to move each folder into the new working mail folders and reorganized my mail.

I am hesitant to reinstall 7.2!? Is there reason to hesitate since I got 7.0 to work? Having 6 or 7 email addresses I would like to use the junk mail controls in 7.2 and would like to reinstall if there's a good chance it will now work.

    Any thoughts?

    JweSLC,

You shouldn't have a problem uninstalling 7.0 and then installing 7.2. Use Add/Remove to uninstall 7.0, delete the C:\Program Files\Netscape folder, unless you are running another version of Netscape or Mozilla. Most importantly, reboot the PC after uninstalling 7.0 and before installing 7.2. You may do this routinely, but most users don't. Just covering all the bases.

The uninstall/reinstall should have no effect on your Profile.

I have come to the conclusion that NS 7.2 does not like me and/or my computor

I have succesfully installed all versions prior to 7.2 and have no problems with my mail. I do not know what else to try. It ran fine from available date till sept 12 +/- then no good.

My thoughts are that there was a change in the way netscape handles the communication of usernames and passwords in, what I call screwy mail hosting services. Not saying it's a netscape issue (probably a hosting issue)

eg. The standard account at Jumpline has it set so that they host wwww.domainname.com and your email would be name@domainname.com with a username name%domainname.com. Is this unusual or not? Not the same as my previous earthlink account nor my ISP account.

If anyone can verify this issue and figure out a workaround, I would sure like to keep up with the versions of netscape.

    JweSLC,

The percent sign in your user name should work with no problem. Something is screwy considering that Mail works in 7.0 an ancient Version, but does not in 7.2? You might consider creating a new Profile for Netscape 7.2, as Mozilla 1.7.3 users also report some quirks. Netscape 7.2 is based on Mozilla 1.7.3 code.

You might want to try Mozilla 1.7.3, as it is basically the same browser, with the difference being that it has no AOL content whatsoever, but the downside is that you can't access your AOL / Netscape webmail from Mozilla Mail & Newsgroups, and there is no NIM (AIM). Mozilla has all the security vulnerabilities fixed, which are still a vulnerability in Netscape 7.2.

Take a look here: Download Mozilla 1.7.3
    Here: Mozilla 1.7.3 Release Notes
    AND
Here: Netscape 7.2 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities

No such luck! Mozilla Browser and Email SETUP worked fine as well as the profile manager, but "The USER command did not succeed. Mail server mail.mydomain.com responded:pOP service disabled." error pops up.

NS 7.1 is still working, although, I do get the error message above - I hit OKAY and hit GET Msgs again and then it works ??????????

    JweSLC,

Check your mail via ISP web interface, and see if there are any spam messages, and if so, delete them. This is a stab in the dark, but works for other Mail problems. Have you compared your settings on the laptop with the settings on the desktop? Do it setting by setting, and you may find a difference, which may be causing the problem. This is a real stumper!

There are no messages at my ISP, NS mail account nor on my hosted mail server. My NS mail account and the ISP account have always worked with no errors. I only get the error when checking my hosted email accounts.

Again, NS 7.1 seems to at least work with the above mentioned glitch (#8).

The settings are the same with the exceptions of the other laptop is running win 2k and I am running xp pro sp2.

    JweSLC,

I couldn't say if the conflict is with your hosting service or Netscape. Are you up for trying Thunderbird? I just finished a lengthy issue for a user with a Mail problem, and the user installed Thunderbird, which solved his issue. You don't have to make it your default Mail client. Just install it, then try to access your hosted Mail Accounts.

Download Thunderbird 0.8. I would use the Zip Archive, as all you have to do is create a folder on your root directory and unzip the file to the new folder. To uninstall, a simple delete of the folder you created is all that's necessary.

:) HI to all !!!!! I'm new to this forum and was looking for an answer to my problem with netscape 7.2. The whole thing just stoped working and erased all my emails and bookmarks from the program !!! Yikes !!!! I was not able even to get conneted again to netscape's web mail. So looking for an answer I found your bbs and with all the ideas I read, I tried this and it worked for me.

I have a cd of Nestcape 7.0 so I went ahead and removed 7.2 and 7.1 without removing the profiles from the folders created by netscape originally, just removed the programs with the add remove from windows.

Then installed 7.0 from scratch and it found everything, even got me connected again to netscape web-mail.

Then downloaded 7.2 fron the web and installed it again from scratch, like it was the first time I did it and it recognized everything again from all the bookmarks and e-mails.

Again this worked for me this time, and even the program is running a little better than it was before.

So thanks to all the great info and I hope I'm posting to the right thread but if I'm not please let everyone else know what I found out.
