Thanks for the reminder Dave - totally forgot that and I even posted to the thread.

I have not installed the v5 but will get it anyway w/ SP2 - and then promply shut auto updates down again.

    Regards - Charles

It's about time you chimed in

    Well, Dave,
Ya coulda cleared that up two weeks ago!

Grrr... I like MS strong arm tactics less and less. I am NOT leaving AU on, any more than I am letting all the MS apps phone home. What if I come home and the screen isn't Luna Blue anymore because MS decided it should be yellow? or red?

Thanks, Dave! Those posts explain what happened to me rather well.

Johanna - you might want to let the auto thing run and see how you like it.

I shut it off with XP and kept it off with SP1 but when I went with SP2 I decided to give it a try since they've made some improvements. I have to say that so far (since RC1) I like it and plan to leave it active.

I also like to control how my PC behaves but am probably a little less 'controlling' than you are. It's a matter of degree rather than absolutes since I don't write all my own apps in assembler but I'd bet you don't either. We'd certainly have more control and things would certainly run faster but it just ain't worth the effort.

This feature, for me, means simply one less thing I need to worry about. If it ever bites me, then off it goes but so far, so good.

Do we have to turn on Auto updates for indication that SP2 is available for download? I have never used the Auto feature but read somewhere that this needs to be enabled for SP2's arrival  I may have already installed SP2 on my main PC as I have the download on disc but am waiting for a little while. I am not sure if I have to prepare my SP1 PC by turning this on or if SP2 will do this anyway  I will enable it on my laptop as I am going to install from the update site but just wondered about my desktop.

    Hi guys,
tying up a few loose ends:

    Charles,

    I haven't set a reminder for anything ...... ...... !

Have You been prompted to install v.5 when visiting WU but denied and subsequently been reminded?

    Johanna,

I thought that we did that earlier on in the discussion ...... ...... !

    miniB,

I have always had it set to notify prior to downloading and I think that will work for notification of SP2 as well.

    Hi Christer,

I turned AU on yesterday and it pops with updates available - 3 - and gives a to "remind in" time interval. That's what I meant. So when the tray icon appears that's when wuauclt.exe is running, when I pick a reminder interval, that's when it stops running. The only reason I turned it on was first to see when SP2 would be offered, I'm going to download it from the Catalog site. The second was because of this thread, to see what would happen - from where was AU starting from and whether I could stop it or not.

No, was not offered v5; didn't use AU to update - never do. Maybe this a Home/Pro issue?

    Regard - Charles

I shut AU OFF in Services after I got the MS update and v5. It turned itself back on, as suggested earlier, internally.

Newt, I see your point about leaving it on, and I would be okay with that, but you missed my point. There needs to be a way for the comp user to control what MS does to the OS and apps when allowed online. When a person downloads anything from MS, MS has unrestricted access to every part of your computer, and can make changes at their discretion. If MS were compromised by a malicious anything, every Windows Computer online is vulnerable. Unless there is a good reason for a program- any program, not just an MS one- to access the net, why let it?

    Hi Christer,

In the meantime, I've looked at another Home system. v5 is installed, this is a system where AU is set up the way yours is, ask before download and now mine for the nonce.

This system has had updates to it via AU and by the evidence plus this from Johanna: "I suspect the v5 update I had to accept from MS to update" earlier in this thread, if you use AU, you get v5 along with it.

I think you installed v5 beta - right?

    Regards - Charles

Sorry Christer, I was thinking about the v5 thread that Dave referenced earlier here and thought you were among those that installed the beta. Sorry for the confusion.

Nothing to be sorry about ...... ...... I'm a master at confusing myself!

Now that I have searched and found, my version of wuauclt.exe is "5.4.3790.2182 built by: srv03_rtm(ntvbl04)" and the size is 112 kb.

To add to the confusion, I also have wuauclt1.exe, version "5.4.3790.2182 built by: srv03_rtm(ntvbl04)" but the size is 165 kB.

    Hi Christer,

Futher update on SP2: AU has SP2 ready to download on the system I just looked at - went to the Catalog site and a message there saying not available as a download, use AU until further notice.

LOL, this situation changes by the minute. Went into the Catalog site on my machine, was offered v5, - up to now have not been - installed v5.

Then turned it off. Will see if the same thing as happened to Johanna happens to me.

    Regards - Charles

BillyBob: Then I would say that your old ones were replaced by SP2, because both of mine, with the same names, are considerably smaller, (112 KB & 164 KB) The first was created at the last clean install, and the second was created when I updated to v5 at MS Updates. I am not using SP2 yet. I am talking about the exe in the c/windows/system32 Version 5.4.3790.2182 Interestingly, also modified the same day, 8/3/04 2pm.
