Got this critter after I clicked on the link and read your article. Objectionable behavior IMO. Any idea who spawned the thing?

No pop ups or ads here, Arie. Helpful article. Thanks for sharing.

    Yes, very nice article Arie...thanks...

Newt...Got the samething as you when I clicked on the link earlier today at work. Google Popup stopper didn't stop it.

I just clicked on the link again just now and my WinXP SP2 Popup stopper stopped it cold.

Arie: Good article, I still have a question though. I have the new update beta version installed. Does this new Update site check the inquiring machine and determine which updates are actually installed? My gripe with the current site has been the statement on "installation history" that the updates may or may not still be installed. It would be nice if the site actually checks the machine and re-installs or offers to re-install updates that may have been inadvertantly or otherwise uninstalled. I think you loose some updates when you either do a repair install or run SFC.

    Thanks Arie. :)

After installing the new control, I was greeted with an error message.
Automatic Updates is disabled. Event Log is enabled. I've had BITS disabled for a long time, per BlackViper's 'safe' setting. After setting it to manual, not even starting the service, I was able to continue to the select your install preference page. I see now in your article that the new site makes use of the BITS, which means perhaps alot of people will have to make the same change I did. :)

    Hello again. :)

Shortly after posting, I again opened services, only to find that the Automatic Update service was not only running, but was also reset to automatic. Not by me! And I did not tell v5 to turn it on either! I stopped the service and again disabled, then reopened v5. It hung on the error page. I set it to manual and reopened v5, it hung on the error page but started the service. Closed and reopened v5 with the service set to manual and running, hung on error page. Set to automatic and disabled BITS, hung on error page. Set BITS to manual and reopened v5, it went though to scan selection page.

So, it seems that the Automatic Update service must be set to automatic and BITS to at least manual to use the new Windows Update v5 site. I also noticed that the very different Automatic Update tab in My Computer>properties was set to turn off through the entire process. Upon toggling to notify, the update icon popped up in the tray and a notification balloon also. Since I am not putting SP2 on this partition's installation, and the pop-up is annoying to me, I reset AU to turn off and the icon disappeared. No pop-up balloon has been seen.

BTW, the BITS never has started, but that may be because I have not accepted any updates.
