My pc had been running slow and i had virtual memory issues suddenly. So after a scan with spybot i found several issues with virtumond. i clicked fix problems and widows began shutting down. Before it did shut down i did see it fixed all problems. and the error it stated for shutting down had something to do with a syst32 file or folder. Then windows repeatedly tried to restart over and over but couldn't. I have recently tried to boot in safe mode and start up with the last config by hitting the F8 on start up. None worked. When starting it seems as tho it gets to a certain point then shuts down and continually tries to restart only to shut down at the same point. i do have my windows xp disc if i need to use it for a repair. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jim. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

    Follow these steps:

    1. Before we try and repair the Windows XP installation press F8 on startup and disable automatic reboot on system failure. Instead of the computer restarting it should hopefully show a stop error (BSOD) which can be researched to see what type of problem you have with the computer. Let me know what the BSOD says if it comes up.
    2. Since it seems like you have tried Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration it looks like you are going to have to use the Windows XP CD to repair the installation.
    3. Boot from the Windows XP CD and when setup has finished loading press R to open the recovery console.
    4. When the recovery console opens it will ask you which windows installation you want to repair.
    5.Type 1 and press enter.
    6. After that it will ask what the administrator password is. If you don't have one leave it blank and press enter otherwise type it in.
    7. After thats done type chkdsk /r and press enter. The process will take a while. Let me know if it finds any corrupted Windows files.
    8. After check disk has finished type exit to quit the recovery console. Then press F3 to quit Wnidows setup. See if the computer will boot normally now.

    9. If the computer does not boot up successfully then boot from the Windows XP CD and and go back into the recovery console.
    10. Enter the command fixboot and press enter.
    11. Enter the command fixmbr and press enter.
    12. Quit setup again and attempt to boot the computer.
    13. If the computer still fails to boot then Perform a Repair Install.

Let me know if the computer will boot after performing the above steps.

If you can boot to your desktop successfully you should try running the suggested Malware reporting tools, this could still be Malware related.

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

im sure that its at least an issue with removing malware. im thinking maybe when i tried to remove it, it took a file with it. i dont know, but i was hoping to at least get my pc up and running so i could get a few things off it before i do a clean install. i have heard there are programs that can retrieve files even after a clean install, maybe ill look into that and just get on with it even if its not true. i cant thank you guys enough and i really appreciate all your help.

Your Welcome Jim. If you need any links to recovery programs feel free to just ask. Good luck and hopefully you can recover some of the data on the machine.

Try some of the free data recovery tools offered here, Data Recovery Programs. I have used the program Recuva and I would recommend it. I would download some of the applications on that website and see which ones you like. :)

You'll have minimal chance of recovering anything if you do a clean install. This will write so much data on your drive, most files will be beyond recovery.
