I have been fighting some kind of virus for the past 2 months and I'm not winning. Plus, my computer is extremely slow, even if I only have IE running and nothing else.

I would like help saving the important files and just starting over. I have the Vista discs, but don't know how to go about it in the right manner.

    Thanks in advance.

Here is a link to the malware thread where we tried to remove the issue but had no luck:

    Hi Carab,
I take it that the important files you are talking about would be My Docs, ie: music, pictures, saved documents and saved downloaded programs?

If you have an external drive I would copy them to it or copy them to DVD, dvd holds more than cd, so if the option is to save to disc, then if you have a dvd drive that would be the way to go.

after you have copied all the files you want to keep, then insert the Vista disc (if multiple, disc 1) into the drive & reboot, follow the prompts for new installation, you will want to re-format the drive, so you will need to read as you go, before pressing any buttons, are the disc's rebuild or is it a genuine installation disc (multiple or single)?

    These are the starting point

    regards Jac

It sounds as if you do not have a current backup of your important data :( - this is vital on any computer.

So, the first thing you need to do is to copy your important data to an external source such as an external hard drive or burn to DVD. Remember to include such items as your email, address book, Internet Explorer Favourites and Cookies, etc.

You cannot copy programs so you will need to find the installation media for all the programs you installed on the computer. If you downloaded any programs and saved the installation file to the hard drive this needs to be backed up as well.

While you are doing that post the details of the Vista disks you have .....

Are they Recovery Disks supplied by the computer manufacturer or a retail discs?

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :)
