I have an HP desktop with XP Pro that was locking up when I had several apps open. I figured adding a memory card should help so that's what I did. There are only two slots for memory cards with a max of 1.5 Gig. I added a .5 Gig card to the existing 1 Gig, and things ran better with no more lockup. However, now I occasionally get "Expanding vitual memory" messages. Why now and not before.

Hi clinet. It could be that your computer is using a high amount of RAM when you are using several applications at once. Your computer is expanding the amount of virtual memory available because your computer is probably running low on available RAM and will have to use virtual memory that your computer uses as if it were RAM on your harddrive. This is called a pagefile.

To get rid of those virtual memory messages try this, click Start< Right click My Computer and click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab< then under Performance click Settings. Now click the Advanced tab. Under Virtual Memory click the change button. Now make sure your harddrive is selected and click on System Managed Size and click the Set button. Click ok on all of the windows to close them and then reboot the computer.

See if those messages popup anymore after making that change.

Thanks Evan Omo. I've done the procedure and now it's wait and see. These messages were only occasional, so whatever happens between now and this comming Friday I'll post on Friday... unless something happens before then.

Ooops... that didn't take long. I got another virtual memory message this morning and had only two apps open. I usually have four or five open.

When you did Evan's suggestion - did you select the "System Managed Size?"

If so, you could try the Custom option and use 3000 for both boxes.

Open Task Manager (right click your Task bar, and from the menu choose Task Manager). Select the Processes tab and click the Mem Usage column.

What is using your memory & how much?

    Mem Usage:
    The biggest is iexplore.exe (100,750K) folllowed by SOMANAGER.exe, iexplore.exe again, WDDMService.exe, HQmanager.exe, iexplore.exe again,,, etc.
There appears to be an iexplore.exe entry for each browser tab. Sometimes I have five or six tabs at one time.

I've tried your Custom-3000-3000 suggestion. We'll see if it works. Thanks.

    Steve R,

Your Custome 3000-3000 suggestion seems to have worked. Thanks a bunch.
