    I have 2 Startup items in the System Configeration Utility which I cannot recognise.

    1. E_S14
    A search found 1 file in C:\Documents and Settings\Main\Local Settings\Temp

    2. E_SC
    A search found 1 file in C:\Windows\Temp

    Are these sinister?

    Should I deselect them in the Startup list?

    Should I delete the files?

    Many thanks if you can help.

    There are 2 items which I cannot identify: "E_S14" & "E_SC" (without the inverted commas). All the other items I can identify.

    Anything running from a temporary folder should be considered suspect, unless you've had a failed install recently ???

    Possibly best to read this and post in the malware forum.

    Thank you for the responses. wildfire's comment got me thinking about the fact that some weeks ago I uninstalled and then re-installed an Epson DX7450 Printer/Scanner. I was doing this because there were (and still are) 2 icons on the task bar. The second icon is labelled Copy 2 but only the fist is on line and is the default printer. I seem to recall that the un/re-install was not straightforward, and I think I also went to the web looking for updated drivers. In any event, the printer/scanner continues to work as advertised, although I still have the 2 icons.
    I looked at the startup items again in Ccleaner and found they are associated with the Epson and the files are called;
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_FATICDE.EXE/FU "C:\DOCUME1\Main\LOCALS~1\Temp\E_S14.tmp "/EF "HKCU "
    and
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_FATICDE.EXE/FU "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\E_SC.tmp "/EF "HKCU "

    I will be away for the next week so will be unable to chase this although the computer will get some use by a part time secretary. In the meantime using the old adage "if it ain't broke etc. ", I think I can safely leave it alone.

    As I am no expert, maybe someone can advise what next. I was thinking of trying Epson support and/or uninstalling and reinstalling again, this time in safe mode.
