[Inactive] Redirection virus

Another person here with a redirect virus. I've had it for about a year now. I managed to stop it once from redirecting (somehow) a few months ago, and it was fine for a while. I stopped using my computer when I got a new netbook, but my netbook is too lame to play games on, so I went back to this for gaming. I remembered that I was extremely lax with protection/updates when I was using this, so I decided to do most of the windows updates that I hadn't done (there were 80, god help me).

Anyway, after I finished with the updates, the redirects came back. It used to take me about 6 tries to get to a page, and now I can't even get to any. I have to make the page by homepage, then close firefox off and open it up again just to get it to load. It's fine if I'm browsing within a page, but as soon as I open up something from google, bam. I was doing some research on it, and someone mentioned checking my hosts file. I don't have one. All I have is lmhosts.sam, which I read was a sample file. I've tried running tdsskiller, and the first time I ran it it came up with two viruses. I think one was a trojan, and the other may have been a virus. I deleted them both anyway, but the redirect virus didn't go away. I tried renaming tdsskiller to 345yefds.com and ran it again, and again it did nothing.

I tried running combofix and it told me that wininit.exe and windows explorer were infected, and attempted to correct them. It said it worked with wininit.exe, but said something else with windows explorer. It went through the processes, and then restarted my computer, and then when it did that it wouldn't get to the user loading screen. It was all just black. I had to do a system restore back to a few days ago to even get it to boot up windows, so combofix is definitely out of the question. I've run malwarebytes, and it only came up with a trojan that wasn't the redirect virus. I tried Trendmicro's Housecall, and nothing. I'm basically buggered, and I desperately need help. I'm not smart enough to figure this garbage out on my own, and I've done everything people have said to do. I'm running Vista, 32 bit.

Welcome aboard [IMG]

Please, complete all steps listed HERE

Please, observe following rules:
• Read all of my instructions very carefully. Your mistakes during cleaning process may have very serious consequences, like unbootable computer.
• If you're stuck, or you're not sure about certain step, always ask before doing anything else.
• Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those I suggest.
• Never run more than one scan at a time.
• Keep updating me regarding your computer behavior, good, or bad.
• The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.
• If you leave the topic without explanation in the middle of a cleaning process, you may not be eligible to receive any more help in malware removal forum.
• I close my topics if you have not replied in 5 days. If you need more time, simply let me know. If I closed your topic and you need it to be reopened, simply PM me.

==================================================

Never run Combofix on your own!

I downloaded Avast, and ran the scanner, and it came up with 4 infections. I have no idea how to post this particular log, so I'll just copy what it says:

File name: C:\Windows\explorer.exe | Severity: High | Threat: Win32:WinPatch
File name: C:\Windows\System32\nt.dll | Severity: High | Threat: Win32:Bamital-BS [Trj]
File name: C:\Windows\System32\wininit.exe | Severity: High | Threat: Win32:WinPatch
File name: C:\Windows\explorer.exe | Severity: High | Threat: Win32:WinPatch

So it looks like the bamital trojan is the one giving me my problems. I'm currently doing the rest of what you said to do, but I thought since it's going to take a while that I'd update you on that while I'm working on the rest.

==== End Of File ===========================

I have a problem with GMER. I can run it and I have the log, but it's extremely long and my computer freezes when I try to post it. Should I re-run it with less options, or cut out the stuff that's basically just letters/numbers, or what?

Instead of GMER...

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

• Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
• Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
• Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
• Click OK.
• Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
• Save the report to your Desktop.
• Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay? ".

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
2. Close any open browsers.
3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
• Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
• Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
• Close any open browsers.
• WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
• Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
• If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG users: ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results ". Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: http://www.appremover.com/
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion ", restart computer to fix the issue.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:
1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode.
2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to yourname.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr
Rkill.exe
• Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
• If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
• A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
• If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
• If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
• Do not reboot until instructed.
• If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.
In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.
DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!
I did the ComboFix and it actually went through to the log this time, so I have the log, but I ended up having to do a system restore because explorer.exe wasn't working and wouldn't work no matter what I tried.
It didn't work properly again, and didn't finish ComboFix or come up with the log file. But I wrote down what it said just in case.
"System file is infected !! Attempting to restore "C:\Windows\explorer.exe "
Deleting files:
C:\Windows\system32\dll
C:\Windows\system32\nt.dll
System file is infected !! Attempting to restore "C:\Windows\System32\wininit.exe "
Successfully restored :> "
Then it rebooted windows. Once again, my computer stopped on the logging off screen, so I was forced to hit the power button, and then turn it back on. I got this message once it loaded up to the user screen:
"C:\Windows\system32\ntl.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or software vendor for support. "
Then I got this message. It's the same one I've gotten every time I've run ComboFix and I'll have to do another system restore unless you'd like me to do something else?
"Windows Explorer has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. "
The only thing that shows on my screen is black with my cursor. I can move the cursor and go to the task manager etc. I can't use my computer in the meantime, and I'm on my netbook now.
Go ahead with system restore.
We'll try a different approach.
Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.
Please download OTLPE (filesize 120,9 MB)
• When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
• Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
• Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
• Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
• Depending on your type of internet connection, you should be able to get online as well so you can access this topic more easily.
• Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
• When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
• When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
• Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
• OTL should now start.
• Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:
/md5start
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
userinit.exe
wininit.exe
nt.dll
/md5stop
• Press Run Scan to start the scan.
• When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
• Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
• Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.
I've got the reatogo-x-pe desktop thing up, but whenever I click OTLPE, a black window flashes, and then I'm asked to browse for a folder. The options are:
RAMdisk (B:
Local Disk (C:
RECOVERY (D:
ReatogoPE (X:
Shared Documents
Direct it to a folder where Windows is actually installed.
Usually it'd be C:\Windows.
Whenever I try directing it anywhere, it says
"RunScanner Error
Target is not windows 2000 or later "
It won't let me do system restore. The screen goes light blue and I can move the cursor around, but nothing happens. I don't have any kind of windows CD, either.
