somehow in trying to transfer over subfolders from a previous profile I created some new numbered subfolders to the inbox I want to get rid of them but cannot so the next best thing is to re-create the profile and transfer over subfolders and folders. The Thunderbird site talks about profile manager on the start menu of Windows I can't find it.

What is the best way to copy over folders edit content using Windows Explorer or get into the appData area

    Hi Jim,

    Welcome to the BBS.

    1. You should be able to delete the desired subfolders simply by right-clicking on them and selecting "Delete" from the context menu.

    2. To copy mail folders from one profile to another, just copy the Mail folder.

    3. To open the profile manager, with Thunderbird closed type <path to>thunderbird.exe -p in the Start > Run window. If you expect to use it frequently, create a shortcut on your Start menu.

    HTH.

I agree with you that you should just be able to right-click and delete but these files do not delete nor do they delete or stay deleted when I go into Windows Explorer and the appData directory

    1. Delete the profile that's giving you problems.

    2. Create a new profile.

    3. Delete the new profile's Mail folder.

    4. Copy the Mail folder from your old profile to the new profile.

    5. After you're sure that all's well with the new profile, delete the old one.

FWIW, I suggest that you NEVER use the standard installation for either Firefox or Thunderbird. Using the custom installation, instead, will allow you to place the program and profile folders in a location of your choice (preferably off of your C: drive) and name them whatever you want. To illustrate, see this post.

Mozilla states to bring up the profile manager is supposed to make sure Thunderbird is not running then hit shift and click on the shortcut but that only brings up Thunderbird in safe mode how do you bring up the profile manager? There is a notation that Thunderbird three and after as a profile manager standalone

    Jim ...

Type the FULL path to "thunderbird.exe" in the Run window, followed by " -p" (note the space between .exe and -p) and you won't get the error.

    For example:

    "c:\program files\mozilla thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p

    or maybe:

    "c:\program files (x86)\mozilla thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p

(Exactly where depends on where you let Thunderbird install the "thunderbird.exe" program file on your computer).

Doc's right. If I hadn't been in a hurry when I wrote my last post I'd have provided an example.

For instance, on my system the path is:
    d:\Mozilla\Thunderbird\Programs\Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe -p
Note that in Doc's examples the paths are contained within quotation marks, while in mine there are no quotes. The reason is because his paths contain spaces, while mine has none.

    profile manager

I am happy to informthat I finally found the profile manager after I located where Thunderbird was a copy the whole path plus the P and up popped the profile.

After I create a new profile what's the best way to copy over individual subfolders of the inbox there seems to be 2 files per subfolder and one is most messages as I want to keep some and get rid of others to start over and there is certain information inside the subfolders I need to keep
