My friend's laptop is Sony with Vista (SP2). She bought and and ran the updated version of Pareto Logic and ran it. I don't know what happened, but she can't open any programs now and the wireless network cannot be connected.

I tried to open the system advanced settings, but, like other software, I couldn't open it to edit DEP settings.

I am stuck. I couldn't even open system restore. What can I do?

Can you get it into safe mode and run system restore back to before the Pareto logic was installed.

What is the full name of the Pareto software and did the updated version match the OS. Did she check that the update was 32 or 64bit, it has to be the same as the OS.

Hi Moorty. The progams that are sold by pareto logic are not to be trusted under any circumstances. Chances are your friend probably ran the program called Regcure which is the most popular program advertised by pareto logic. If your friend payed for the program I would suggest that she contact her credit card company and dispute the charges in order to get a refund.

In the meantime follow marks instructions and try to perform a system restore to a point before the pareto logic program was installed. If system restore doesn't work then see if you can run the program and restore the backups that it made to the system.

Hopefully you can get the labtop running again.

Thank you, Mark and Even. Thanks to your help I was able to restore the computer to earlier date (first I tried Nov. 17th, that didn't work, then I tried Nov. 4, which did). I had to use another software to restore some windows services like Programs and Features which I used to uninstall Pareto Logic and File Cure. I did see regcure but I couldn't find an entry to unstall it. I advised my friend not use those software and get her money back.

I ran Malware bites for a few minutes and it already found hundreds of infected files. No wonder! The network connection (wireless) is iffy, but it works at least sometimes. With the Malware removal I hope it will work better.

The computer is on its way to complete health.

    Thank you both, once again.

I'm sorry, Broni, but I don't understand what you mean by the 'requested log(s). Most of the infected files (there were 215 of them) were generated by MyWebSearch. What's the reason?

Its great that you were able to restore your system back to a workable state.

Since malwarebytes found some infections present you should post a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum like broni stated above to make sure your computer is completely cleaned.

I still don't understand, Evan, about posting a new thread in Malware. What would be the point of it? It has found 215 infected files, but most of them were generated by MyWebSearch. But now I think the computer is clean. What else?

How would you know for sure without checking?

In any case, it's your computer and your decision.

So, you would like me to follow the 'post' mentioned above and make sure it's clean? Is that it?
Anyway, my friend took her laptop back last night, but I can tell her what to do.

If Malwarebytes found infected files on the system who knows if the machine has other nasties that are present on it. You just don't know for certain and that uncertanty could lead to other problems down the road. It won't hurt to at least check to make sure the system is clean plus it will give you and your friend peace of mind.
