    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

At what stage to you see this error message - during the install?
No - the files are part of the OS and would be loaded during installation.

Are you installing from a genuine, retail XP installation CD?

    Hi nicky,

Please complete your system details it could save a lot of time when resolving this or further issues.

Some older systems may have trouble booting from CD, If you complete your details it would give us a better idea of what's going on. I know you can't run SIW but please try and complete the specs as best you can.

    Read my previous post,

Include the number (and type) of CD/DVD drives and how they're connected IDE/SATA/External etc.

Are there any other drives in the computer - if so disconnect them and just leave the new drive connected.

If it is a PATA drive - connected to the motherboard with a wide ribbon cable, make sure it is jumpered as Master and connected to the end of the cable.

If it is a SATA drive - connected to the motherboard with a narrow ribbon cable ~1/2" wide or a round cable, it will not require jumpering.

Check the connections of the cables at both ends, both of the drive and the CD-ROM drive. You may have disturbed the latter when fitting the new drive.

Are you sure that the CD-ROM drive is functional?

When you set the boot order in BIOS did you save the settings before exiting the BIOS?

As you have a new OS CD I assume it is clean and unmarked?

Edit - Wildfire responded while I was posting and doing other things :) Paddy - I'm away as of tomorrow for a week and will leave this in your capable hands :)

Are you sure you set the optical drive that you are using as the first boot device?

Have you tried the other optical drive?
