    Re IE8 on Windows 7 build 7600

I've just reinstalled Windows 7. Now, when I right-click in the IE8 icon on the taskbar, the Frequent/Tasks menu (the IE Jump List) pops up but Open New Tab and Start InPrivate Browsing no longer work. Another IE8 icon flashes up briefly on the taskbar but it disappears straight away and nothing else happens.

I've tried disabling all add-ons but no joy.

    Any ideas?

Hi winseven. Try running a reset of Internet Explorer 8. How to reset Internet Explorer settings. See if opening a new tab and inprivate browsing works after resetting IE8.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    Hi Evan,

Before I try a reset - will it delete my add-ons altogether (e.g. convert to pdf, etc)? I don't want to have to reinstall everything.

Will it delete everything in the favorites bar too?

No the reset will only disable the add-ons. You can re-enable them manually after the reset in finished. If you are concerned about your favorites being removed then you should back them up first.

Ok - I've backed up the Favorites folder.

Ok, I did a reset and Open New Tab and Start InPrivate Browsing still don't work from the Frequent/Tasks menu.

Maybe a simple setting is turned off somewhere. Where are all the settings & data stored for the IE8 Jump List? I can't find them.

I just realised Media Player's Jump List tasks aren't working either - so it's a Windows problem, not an IE8 problem.

    Any ideas anyone?

Make sure you have the latest graphic card drivers installed.

Arie - the card is a Radeon HD9600 Pro. I just installed the latest ATI Catalyst driver (v10.2 - released 17 Feb) and it makes no difference.

It must be a bug somewhere else in Windows. None of the jump list tasks work (in WMP and IE8) but all of the frequent/recent/pinned items work (for all taskbar icons).

Hold on, before you re-install Windows try clicking Start< Run and type sfc /scannow. After SFC finishes reboot the computer and see if the problems that you experienced have been fixed or not.

I already ran sfc / scannow and it didn't work.

W7 is now reinstalled (11 hours). I spend most of my time trying to keep Windows running properly!

(I have two C:drives hence my previous post is only 1 hour ago - this is the new C: drive)

Ok then. Are you having any more issues with your Windows installation or is this issue now resolved?

Yes it's resolved - but only by reinstalling absolutely everything from scratch.

If I know Windows, the same thing will probably occur again at some point - without any warning or clue as to what caused it.
