One of them happens to be my 3rd cousin, that lived 8 miles away growing up, and who is only 1 month younger than myself. My father and his mother worked in the same factory, and the year we both broke an arm, my Dad got both sets of paperwork from insurance .... was fun figuring out why everything got double billed.

    What's in a name!

To be honest, I'm less interested in my given/christian name: Robert Nichols, than the nicknames I've been given and have given myself.

My parent's didn't know me when they gave me that name. I was a little pink thing peeing in my nappies and screaming for food a lot. That name says more about my parents and where I came from than it does about what I am now. I'm pleased they gave me a reasonable name and it does its job as a useful identifier, but it doesn't really say a lot about me.

There is also something I rather like about being individual enough to inspire others to give me a nickname. Some of them have been rather inflammatory and unflattering, but almost always they raised a smile. And who would not welcome an easy way to raise a smile in others!

I also find nicknames useful as it can give me some reference as to where people know me from. I have a terrible memory for names. So it's useful for me to know that if some one calls me Ert (derived from Rob...ert) they probably know me from University. At work I'm known as Dr Bob, so in ten years time, if someone calls me Dr Bob, I'll know I know them through my work now. It's very useful for a forgetful buffoon like me.

ReggieB, like my previous nicknames, says a lot more about me than my "real" name. Especially as it derives from a name given to me by others. Specifically people who I used to share a small newsgroup with in the early nineties. I became Reggie because others in the newsgroup decided R in rnichols obviously stood for Reginald. As for the B, that comes from their assessment of the quality of my postings. It was B******s. And hence ReggieB.

I feel I've earned the name ReggieB and I use it with pride.
