Have no plug and play on the three USB ports, have checked in device manager and every device on USB reports no problems, there is the 2Volts on each of the ports, an now at a loss, could it be an incorrect set up in the BIOS? This Acer is in perfect condition and given to me recently, however the BIOS is protected by an unknown password, so i am hoping that the problem is software related, all help greatly appreciated. with thanks

    Standard start point .....

Device Manager - Uninstall all USB controllers and Root Hubs - reboot to allow Windows to redetect and test.
They may be disabled in BIOS.

You can download the manual from the Acer website. They talk about a "default password" (zeroes), but it doesn't seem to be for the BIOS.

When you connect a device, nothing changes under USB in Device Manager? You can try uninstalling everything under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager they will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot.

Not having the BIOS password might be a problem in other areas in the future. In a search I see Acer can ask for several hundred dollars for resetting it.

I don't know if a "power reset" might help. You disconnect power, remove the battery and hold down the power button for at least 15 seconds.

Good luck, it's a pity that the system is crippled in such a way.

You can get a PCMCIA card with USB ports.

    Matt
