How can I stop the Your Firefox is critically out of date. An update is required to stay secure warning. I want to say behind the game on v56 so that I can still use a number of excellent add-ons which will no longer be available on the later vaersions.

I have checked the Never check for updates (not recommended) option in the General settings but this does not suppress the regular banner warning.

For obvious reasons, I recommend you update Firefox and keep it updated. Staying secure is more important than maintaining support for legacy, discontinued add-ons since a secure browser is often our front-line defense against malware.

That said, if you choose to ignore the obvious reasons, see the "Opting out" section of this support article.

    Bill, thanks for the info.

Thanks also for your cautionary note, much appreciated. I am planning to update in the near future when I have had time to re-assess my add-ons and any possible update or replacements.

I try walk a fine line between risk and usability.

Well, I don't update Firefox too. Thanks for the reminder.

Note there are several update options for FF. Of course they recommend "Automatically install updates". There is also "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" and "Never check for updates (not recommended)". I have mine set to Never but only because FF is not my default or primary browser. I just remember to check and install when I do fire it up.

Updating FF to the latest is surely to have the latest security version available? Quantum 60.0.1 is what I am running on this comp and I have no problems.
I tend to only use Addons if I need it. FF Quantum is slightly faster than Chrome from a report in How to Geeks.

I understand the points made re security, but, as I posted earlier, as I use a number of add-ons that will not, currently at least, work in Firefox 57+ then I have to make a balance between usability and security.

In terms of speed, then, tbh, that often seems to be more dependent on the targeted site than the browser, at least from my point of view.

As a matter of interest, I have been trying Pale Moon which is an early, well established, fork of Firefox and it seems very fast, comparing site for site with Firefox. It is updated, security-wise and code-wise, regularly and is currently on v27.9.2 More like the old days without the latest unused bells and whistles of Firefox 57+

I've been using Pale Moon as my primary/default browser for a few years now. It is not perfect, but I like it. My preferred browser was IE. While I have no proof, I kept getting the feeling Microsoft was slowly poisoning/breaking IE to push users to Edge. But IMO, Edge still is not mature enough (but its getting there).
Is it really "usability"? Or just an unwillingness to give up a favorite add-on? It would seem to be the latter if you find Pale Moon is meeting your needs.

I'd ditch Firefox Quantum, and go with either Pale Moon or Waterfox.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

However, I do install updates, but I let the browser (Waterfox) alert me first.

Like Bill, I've been using Pale Moon (currently 27.9.2) as my default/primary browser for at least the last five years. It's configurable with many legacy extensions, at least one of which, TabMix Plus, I'd be hard-pressed to do without.

I have both FF Quantum (60.0.1) and Waterfox (56.2.0) installed as well, mainly to see how much they can be configured, and how useful they might be. So far, though, neither comes even close to being as useful, or as user=friendly, as my configuration of Pale Moon.

That said, browser speed, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, and Pale Moon is more than fast enough for me.

    That's MY 2¢ worth. 8^)

Agree with Jim. Pale Moon is well worth the effort. Does all I want with a smaller footprint than Firefox.

Have also been looking at Basilisk, which is from the same stable as Pale Moon

    To suppress the update warnings:

Type in the address bar about: config
Type "update" in the search bar (without the quotes)
    Find:
    app.update.silent
and set its value to true
Close and restart Firefox in order for the change to take effect.

    James ...

FWIW, here's what my PM Menu bar and Tool bar look like, with many of the features I use most displayed as icons. A simple click on the icon and it opens.

Jim, Pale Moon looks like the Swiss Army knife of browsers from what I can see. I'm sure it's great browser, but maybe just a bit too much for me - for now.

I'll stick with Waterfox for the moment.

James, don't forget that I've been using Pale Moon for years, and I've frequently changed my UI to reflect my needs of the moment. PM has the advantage of being quite customizable so, if you'll excuse a bad metaphor, you can go from a dish of plain vanilla to a banana split with whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Interesting regarding suppression of the banner.

I took the advice from Bill, 2018/05/12, where the reference he gave advised

    extensions.shield-recipe-client.enabled.
    set value to false

That did the trick and the annoying reminders stopped.

Then, I read the note from TonyT, 2018-06-01, and, perhaps, in retrospect, recklessly, applied

    app.update.silent
    set value value to true

Now, instead of the banner message when I open the browser, a pop-up appears at the top right.

A new Firefox outdate is available.

    Update your Firefox ...

    Download Update | Not now

Is it possible to use some setting, or, indeed, modifying one of the two above, to suppress this current irritation? Changing both of those settings, separately, to default and so on have no effect.

Incidentally, or coincidentally, a new entry has suddenly appeared above the Sync line, in the Options drop down menu, which now displays a green up-arrow iconmat the top right of the hamburger icon

    Download Firefox updates
    Sign-in to Sync.

Solved that pop-up issue. One of the config settings must have reset my update options from "Never check" to "Check for updates"

The icon has disappeared, and the menu line refered to above has gone as well.

Sorry for my stupidity and wasting your time by not checking that before posting. :-(
