Windows 10 slow internet speed

I hope someone can help. I am running Windows 10 64 bit HP system and recently upgraded my DSL from 6 mbsp to 15 mbsp to be able to download video on demand for the tv (which has improved) and also use a roku with my computer. After the upgrade, the internet speed didn't seem to be any faster so contacted my ISP and they sent out a tech. He checked it out and the speed coming in is right where it is supposed to be at 18 mbsp. His laptop connected to the modem ran very fast both connected to the modem and wirelessly, but he was using Windows 7. He said that there is a problem with Windows 10 and internet speed. I have tried a few things I found on the internet such as stopping automatic updates for Windows, apps running in the background, and disabling whatever was suggested, but nothing helps. I would love to have the speed that the tech showed me, so how can I get it?

 

Oh bullfeathers! I am afraid he lied to you. If that were true, there would be well over 400 million very unhappy Windows 10 users out there.

Please make sure you have enabled Windows Update again. Keeping our systems current is one of, if not the most important things we can do to keep our systems secure. And please note that Windows Update is designed to download and install updates in the background just so they do not bog down our systems.

It is more likely a configuration problem on your system, most likely with your security apps. What security are you using? And how much RAM do you have installed?

Run speedtest.net and see what you get.

Oh, and just for clarification, it is Mbps (Megabits per second).

Yeah, I just setup a new Win 10 machine (64 bit also) for my elderly Ma, and she's getting 50+ Meg download speed on Ethernet, and my O/S 10 laptop was getting a solid 50 also wireless.

My experience with DSL was that sometimes old phone lines deteriorate and you have crosstalk--although you stated the tech had a good connect.. you also said you upgraded to 15 but the tech said you were getting 18?

Hi mary651, I see from a Google that your comp was introduced in 2009. It is a HP product that can be ordered to your specification of internals. Please take the time to fill in your System Details which will help us to better help you.
If you are achieving the Mbps from your ISP and your comp is not reacting as fast as the Technicians Laptop - you may need a clean up of your OS.
Are you using a 3rd. party Anti-virus?
My HP Notebook 1000 (in use now) using Bill's speedtest link - is currently showing 49.89Mbps D/L and 9.68Mbps U/L and I'm on Fibre-Optic cable with a 300Mbps Plan.
My Notebook connects to the internet wirelessly and takes less than 2 seconds to connect. I am also using an SSD in this Notebook.

I appreciate everyone who responded and hope that you will read my reply below as I hope it covers everyone's questions. "retiredlearner" you were right about the computer date, we bought it in May 2009 and came with Vista.

Bill, I ran the speedtest twice and got 15.51/2.08 and 15.54/2.03 which would be wonderful if my computer would work as fast. After I shut the Windows Update off and it made no difference, I put it back on. My computer is probably not the fastest available. It is an HP, I have 4.00 RAM, 64 bit, Windows 10 Home Version 1607(because I put it back to this after updating to the latest in case that was the problem), Processor Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5300@2.60 GHZ. It is a computer that crashed that was my husband's and I put a new 1 Terabyte hard drive in it and got it working again. He doesn't do a lot on his computers, so this one wasn't one that I would have chosen. No WiFi connectivity and was one that had no frills. I run Avast anti-virus free version which I keep up to date and run scans frequently, CCleaner free version, and Malwarebytes free both I keep current and run my scans and clean everything up that I can. I know that 15 mbps is not really fast, but it is through our local phone company and they said that they have 18 mbps to make sure that they are giving enough to hopefully keep customers. We don't do gaming online or download movies on the computers so the need for extreme fast capability isn't there, but I was hoping that I could use the Roku for watching movies if I had increased speed. I plan to go to Microsoft and re-install the newest update for Windows 10 again.

If I have missed any pertinent computer information, let me know. Any further suggestions to get my computer running more speedily on the internet would be very much appreciated. Thanks, you guys are great!!

 

Hi mary651, I would in the 1st instant uninstall Avast AV. Windows Defender is the builtin Security in W10 and is the complete package that will protect your comp. Try this and see if there is any improvement.I have 3 Desktops and my HP Notebook all running W10 and using Defender - NO problems.
If there is no improvement then I would suggest trying Evan Omo's cleanup program.

 

I have uninstalled the Avast, made sure Windows Defender was updated, ran a scan which didn't find anything, and the computer does seem to be somewhat better. When I checked the Network Speed Test that I installed from the Windows Store, it is now showing about 11.54 speed which is twice what I was getting before. I was just wondering if you could direct me to Evan Omo's clean up program? I would like to see what he suggests and if it would improve it some more. I do like a well running computer. I started optimizing Windows 10. The first clean up program "PC Decrapifier" had only one thing to uninstall for Windows Live which I don't use. "The Should I Remove it" program was helpful and I uninstalled several more with explanations. The "Decrap My PC" is scary. There are 160 programs that it wants to uninstall and I am so glad I didn't click on the automatic uninstall that was an option. It wants to uninstall my printer software, microsoft office, powershell listings, browsers, etc. I really could use some guidance as to what it all means. The first 40 listed are automatically starting software, does this mean that by uninstalling these program files that the program will be there, but won't automatically start? I would like to copy and paste this list and get someone to tell me what should be kept and uninstalled. Can someone help and can I copy and paste to this forum?

 

OK, I'm no geek. But the post by Evan Omo is frankly absurd, particularly in recommending Decrap My PC. This program is designed to (quoting from its own opening screen) "restore your computer to its freshly installed Windows state by fully removing ALL the installed software and all the non-standard Start Menu and and Desktop icons." Just a wee bit of overkill, don't you think, particularly since it offers a fully automatic option? Offering this program to a home user is like offering a chainsaw to a five-year-old.
For the record, I did download, install and run it, although I backed out pretty quickly. It has now been uninstalled.

Evan, thank you for taking the time to respond. I am attaching the screenshots of what I have installed on my computer from the Control Panel. CCleaner also has a tool to uninstall programs and it seems to have extra programs listed. I was just wondering why it would add items not in the Control Panel version. If you read the beginning of my thread, the reason I started the discussion here was to increase my computer's speed on the internet. As I said I recently increased the DSL from 6 to 15 and it hasn't changed much in speed using my computer. I downloaded and used a Network Speed Test from the Windows Store. The best I could get was 12.34 and that was only once, but the speed should be around 15 to 18 according to my ISP. Most of the time it is 6 or less. Is there something besides optimizing my computer to take advantage of the DSL speed that is available. I went to speedtest.net and it showed 15.54. Do you think that it is just that the computer is older? The statistics on the computer are listed above in one of my replies. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

 

Evan, I uninstalled all of what you suggested except the Epson programs for my printer, the manual for my Canon Camera, and Adobe Photoshop Elements as I purchased that one. I started the Optimization guide and got to the Windows Services #6 and I am not comfortable or knowledgeable enough to eliminate any of them. Can you help with this? Do I need to upload what the services list looks like, do you want me to continue with the optimization, or would it not work without removing some of the services?

 

Sorry, I have not had time to continue with the steps to resolve the problem with the slow internet. I have not forgotten about the thread. I have been very busy with volunteer work, but will continue with the process when things slow down again. Probably won't get back to it until late September. Really appreciate the help everyone has given me. Will update you on my progress when I am working on it again.
