Processor and RAM activity look great, but at times there's a lag in cursor / mouse pointer movements, and an overall sluggishness in the GUI. Disk Write times seem to be rather high, but it's not something I usually monitor, so I am not sure if my disk numbers are normal or not.

    According to what?

Sadly, you've told us nothing about this computer. :(

    Have you scanned for malware?

How much free disk space is on the drive? Did you disable automatic defragging (if a hard drive)?

I can't tell you because I don't usually monitor this activity. There's ample free space left, so that shouldn't be a problem. My computer specs are on the left of the screen. Windows defragger handles the defragging chores.

    Malware Bytes is clean.

    Ummm, not on my screen.

If you can't tell me what told you your write times seems rather high, then how do you know they are?

Before Malware, check the health of your hard disk. A falling hard disk can have high write time.

Yes. Your drive has bad sectors. Backup everything & get a new drive.

Considering this is an OEM computer (Dell - Windows 7, 64-bit), will I have to purchase a new Seagate drive from the computer maker?

No. You can get any hdd either Seagate or WD or Toshiba from anywhere. It's up to you.

I take it you ran dell diagnostics. Follow rsinfo's advice before you get the dreaded dell error code 2000-0142(Failed Hard Drive).

Certainly could. I would run check disk again every few days and see if more errors or uncorrectable errors occur. A drive can become corrupt due to many reasons - power failures/crashes and malware are common. But once corrected, subsequent error checking should not reveal more problems. If you keep getting reported errors, then I sure would not trust that drive.

Of course, whether you get errors or not, you should always have a current backup.

Not yet, LJ, but I did run Seatools, and I got an error code prompting me to download and run the DOS version of the same tool. However, when the PC boots off the CD disc I made, I get some kind of weird error page along with a steady beep. The same disk works just fine on the Windows 7 laptop though. Maybe I need to burn the DOS ISO to a flash drive and see if that works.

Thanks for bringing the Dell diagnostic feature. I rarely use it because it is a resource hog of sorts.

You should try running just the HDD diagnostics to see if it gives you any fault codes. Last year my friends dell desktop kept asking him to the Dell Autofix Utility he kept clicking no. I had to explain to him that the Autofix just does not alert you unless it found a critical error. Finally after a month he clicked yes then he informed me I was right. This guy is so stubborn he still insists on using old dell latitudes with XP. Sorry I didn't mean go off on a tangent but he called me today to tell me he that a laptop I chose for him 2 months ago he bought and has been using it for the past month and a half for his karaoke business. I thought I was going to have to call rescue. I not saying your stubborn. It's just that I got so excited that I had to tell someone.

What is an invalid op code?

I managed to burn Seatools DOS to USB, but after booting off the USB drive, I get an error code (invalid op code) I have never encountered before, and the motherboard begins beeping. Is there something in BIOS that needs changing? Beginning to wonder if my CMOS battery is weak.

LJ, I can't run any Dell HDD diagnostics. Here is the error code below when I try to use System Detect...

OK...I managed to boot into Dell's diagnostic tools by pressing F-12, and here are the results of the HD test...

    Error Code 2000-01 42
    Validation 66273
Msg: Hard Drive 1 - S/N Z2AHXLVT Short Self Test Unsuccessful

The other computer components passed OK.

Sounds like the drive may be going bad.

Yes Back everything up 2000-0142 dell error code for failing HD also the reason for system detect failing to open which is rare, but it does happen. Sometimes a loose cable this is more critical than a loose cable. Time for a new drive.

Thankfully, I purchased a 2nd drive a while back, and I've been using it for monthly backups. I'm quite sure the backup includes recovery and hidden partitions too, but I will check and make sure. Very important files are backed up to USB often. I best order me a new drive soon!

EDIT: This is a 500GB drive. Would there be difficulty restoring my backup to a 1TB drive (if I purchased one)? I have the free version of Acronis for Seagate for what it's worth.
