I have a dell OptiPlex 790 windows 7 pro 64 bit sp1 that is 3yrs 3mon old that just shuts itself off "windows is shutting down" no error, no beeps, no number codes.ok, so I switched hard drives and memory from a second dell 790 and I still have the first machine shutting down with my hard drive and memory. and this is in 2 different locations. list is what I have done.

ran dell diag full twice with no errors
    replaced memory again no fix
    replaced power supply no fix
replaced motherboard /w updated bios no fix
    temps are all ok
    replaced data cables
    diff. keyboard & mouse
    diff monitor
power range is also good (HWMONITOR)

watched it happen this morning and tried to get viewer's error and one was scregsetvalueexw
would this error cause the machine to shut down? this has me stumped!

    thanks
    chuck

Does it shut down while being used or while sitting idle?

I just noticed something, when I go into device manager and click on details under generic USB hub properties it just keeps flashing and can't do anything but close it and only does under details

First thing I'd do is take it outside, remove the side cover and blow out the dust using my air compressor. Hold the fan blades fixed while blowing.

Hi chuckk2, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Does the computer shut down while the system is running in Safe Mode? Have you updated all of the computers drivers? Are you overclocking any components?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Try uninstalling that generic USB hub in Device Manager, reboot. Its driver is probably corrupted and that will cause a fresh driver copy to be auto reinstalled.

    folks

I looked under system in viewer also right before shutdown occurred and seen this error and thought you could tell me what it means

"he kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition"

a lot of stopped states 8-10 right before the above error

I do thank all of you for your help
    thanks much
    chuck

I'm thinking there's a short on the motherboard. Those registry leak errors are normal behavior for Windows when the system is headed toward a shutdown and applications close and leave some files or functions resident in memory. Windows must then force the clearing of memory if it can. It may not. Since these errors come after shutdown is initiated I consider them non-significant.

Usual causes of a problem like this are: (in no order)
    1. dust build up caused a section of motherboard to heat up and short.
    2. failing component on motherboard.
    3. CPU heatsink not seated properly or it may need more goop.

Example: (in one case it was a bad power button)

And you won't find any errors that relate to shutdown because shutdown is not the problem. There's an unknown problem that causes a shutdown. And in my experience this type of problem is hardware related.

To trace down hardware that causes the problem I would remove all internal components that are not needed to use the computer, e.g. secondary hard drive, cd/dvd, graphics card (only if motherboard has onboard video to use), other pci and pcie cards. Strip it down to only what's needed, e.g. boot drive and video, keyboard & mouse. If get joy, add components one by one until the problem returns. If no joy then there's some onboard hardware causing the problem.

Based on what you've already done, I'd look at wiring, cables and fixed stuff on the case.
