I have URL links on my Favorites bar and was wanting to use the "Notes" Property on the "Details" tab to store some .. well um ... notes. this user [deliberately does not have admin rights on the machine.
For some reason when I try to "Apply" it (or click OK), I get File Access Denied prompt "You'll need to provide administrator permission to apply properties to this file.". So I fill in the administrator password - it selects the name of my Admin Account for me.
But then I get another File Access Denied prompt "You require permission from BRICK\<local std account userid> to make changes to this file". The user quoted is the user I am logged into. Using Try Again just reopens this same prompt. Only option is to "Cancel".
    ...
Is there a way to get IE11 on Windows 10 to allow me to us this Property field?

I have also just tested this on the Admin Account .. I get the same series of two prompts - "need administrator permission" ... which the logged in userid has, followed by File Access Denied prompt "You require permission from <logged in userID> to make changes to this file").
Given I have admin rights already why would this be denied?!?

Thanks for the idea, I've experimented with doing this. The result is ... user is already the owner of the file so when I "change" it doesn't actually change (because the user is already the owner).

Question: Is there any reason Microsoft wouldn't want to allow a user to update the properties of their own files by default anyway? After all it's the current user that is allowed to, & does actually, create the favorites entry in the first place? And it doesn't even allow an administrator to do it!

Open a command prompt as admin.
Use this command to set Read-Write-Modify permissions (of Favorites for your standard account):

    Code:
    icacls "C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\Favorites" /grant YOUR USER NAME:(OI)(CI)F /T
icacls - command to modify access control list of files
    F = Full control
CI = Inheret Containers (sub folders)
OI = Object Inheret (files in folder)
/T = Apply recursively (apply to all existing subfolders and all files)

You should then be able to modify all aspects of Favorites.

This problem often comes up as a result of upgrading operating systems. During an upgrade, file permissions sometimes change.

Thanks for icacls command. With CD C:\Users\myUID selected, "icacls .\favorites /grant myuid: (OI)(CI)F /t" successfully processed all files (& folders), with 0 failures.
[NB no space between : and open bracket ... saves showing a smilie in this post]

However .. result is the same. I still get the "give me the admin user password" followed by "you need permission from myUID". So still can't save anything in the properties field (Notes or Description).

A check of security settings shows it has all the permissions available are ticked - see uploaded file Capture.JPG.

    A reboot makes no difference.

Sounds like a registry value is not getting properly toggled. Try changing your account type to an Administrator, temporarily. See if you make the necessary edits, then revert back.

Changed my account type, rebooted (reason: "make extra sure ..."), and logged back in. Same loop with same net effect .. it won't let me use the property fields :(

Maybe I'm destined to "just live with it" The PC is brand new PC with a clean Win10 build too (bought from a shop), so I'd expect it to be a clean install rather than an upgrade from Win8.x.

I agree with you as you would expect a clean install of 10. Seen worse happen before. Take it back to the shop and ask them about your problem and ask if it was a clean install or an upgrade from Win 7 or 8.

Looks to me that function is just FUBAR. I tried it with 3 Win10 installations and can't get it to work. I tried an old IE7 install, same thing. It just doesn't seem to work.

Only post I could find is one from 2011: Adding notes/descriptions to IE favorites which has no working solution either.

I think I need to declare this is an unsolvable problem - needs Microsoft to "enable it" (why are they blocking it from working, seems more effort required than not blocking it in the first place!?!).
How can I mark this thread as "answered, but sadly un-Solvable" ??

You don't mark it. Just leave it 'as-is' ;)
