No two adapters are alike since there isn't a specific set of wiring instructions for them.

Just have to keep trying other adaptors until you find one that works.

Do you mean I have to buy many different adapters and try one by one?

    A few questions ....

Is the PS/2 port known to be functioning?

Is the adaptor known to be serviceable.

You are plugging the adaptor into the keyboard socket? General colour coding for port & adaptor is mauve (mouse is green)

Does a PS/2 keyboard work in the port?

Does the USB keyboard work in a USB port?

Have you checked in BIOS to see if there is an option to disable PS/2?

I'm guessing this is a desktop so why not install additional USB ports via a plug in card to give you extra capacity? BTW ....

You've ticked all the boxes and narrowed the issue down to the new USB keyboard. The only issue I can suggest is that the USB plug on the keyboard is not playing nice with the socket on the adaptor.

If you have more than enough USB ports what is the incentive to plug the keyboard into the PS/2 socket?

Hi Matthew, If you say you've done as Pete suggested - did you scroll to the bottom of the page in UserCP and SAVE? Neil.

I feel that a keyboard should be plugged into the dedicated socket intended for it.

I went to "Edit System Specs" and then "Save Changes ". Was that what I should have done?

PS/2 sockets are dedicated to PS/2 devices, USB sockets to USB devices - a USB keyboard is not a dedicated PS/2 device.
Under Thread Display Options did you check Show System Specifications ?

As Steve said, not all PS/2-USB adapters are exactly the same.

Also, try turning the computer off, attaching the PS/2-USB adapter, then the keyboard and now turn the computer and see if it works. (Your PS/2 keyboard port may not be hotpluggable).

Thanks Matthew I can see your "System" info now. I would agree with Doc's suggestion that you make the adapter and keyboard connection with the comp switched off.
I used the same type of setup a few years ago (W98SE) and PS/2 as you would know are not hotpluggable and the same applies to PS/2 Mouse. Neil.

Bingo! SpywareDr's method works! Many thanks! I didn't expect the PS/2 port is not hotpluggable.

    What is W98SE?

W98SE was an improvement over W98. The numerals were the year of release.
Glad to see that you connected it the correct way.
ALL cable connections to your comp must be made when the comp is powered down/off. With the exception of the USB connectors which are able to be plugged in and out when the computer is powered on. Your RJ45 is another one which is safe to plug in hot.
I'm mot sure about Firewire IEEE 1394 or Bluray or HDMI connectors as I don't use/have them.
I stand to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable. Better to be safe than sorry. Neil.
