When in Australia in 2010 I bought components to build 2 PCs and upgrade a third one for family members there. That upgrade did not happen and I had an OEM copy of Win 7 64 left over that I brought back to Ireland with me.
I now want to install it in a re-built PC but the key is not being accepted. The HD is a new SSD one. Firstly it gave the message that the key was incorrectly entered and to re enter it, this in turn gave a message that the disk may not be a genuine MS product.
Is there a fix? or might Microsoft sort this out?

I wouldn't hesitate to contact Microsoft for help. There Contact information in Ireland is here: http://www.microsoft.com/ireland/contact/

Hope you get it worked out. Not an easy trip to the store to return it :)

I rather doubt that MS will be at all interested - the reason why OEM is cheaper than retail is that support is provided by the PC builder, NOT MS. No harm in trying though :)

It may be that your OEM software is tied into a specific hardware setup.

Have a look at Microsoft's How to Tell site.

There is no doubt that it was a genuine Microsoft product in standard sealed packaging.
I will contact MS later and I will report the final outcome back here.

    Issue resolved.
Did a custom install and it worked! Don't really know why, unless it was really a Key entry error.
    Thanks to all who contributed.
