I know that this is not a new subject but I have not found anything that has helped the situation so I am hoping someone has some thoughts on what I might do next.

I have Vista Business in a ThinkPad - everything is up to date including the wireless driver. I also have an Emachines netbook running Win7 Starter. They connect via a Linksys WRT54GV8 with the latest firmware.

The netbook never drops the connection - the ThinkPad consistently loses the signal to the point where I have to either restart the computer or reboot the router.

At the suggestion of search results I have read, I disabled IPv6 and set the channel to 11 in the router. My network is a home network and there is no security on it as the house is about half a mile through a dense forest from the nearest neighbour. I did enable WPA2 security as a test but that made no difference.

In device manager I see that Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter #2 has an exclamation point but when I go to update the driver, it comes back as the most appropriate driver is installed. Other reading tells me to download the latest network driver (which I did) but there is no change, the problem is still there in the DM

Any other thoughts would be appreciated

Have you tried manually configuring the TCP/IPv4 settings?

I never rely on Windows to tell me if a driver is up-to-date. I always go to the PC manufacturer's or the component manufacturer's website to look for updated drivers.

Have you tried flushing the DNS and renewing the IP?

By now this is all may be moot if you bought a new router and it fixed the problem......

Thanks Mitch. The laptop has developed a new problem in that the HDD appears to be dying so the router issue has been deferred. The machine is on its way to me now so I should be able to sort it out when I have it.

Final resolution is, I replaced the hard drive, installed Win 7 and sent it back with a new router... everything works with one exception

There is a HP printer D2560 installed on a Win XP Pro desktop computer. It was the default printer through the network when we had Vista. I connected to the printer through the network and printed a test page just fine but when I go to print from Word 2007 nothing happens. Nothing arrives at the printer but there is no indication of a failure on either machine.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer on the XP machine and it works

Now I am baffled. any other thoughts would be welcomed

Did you install the drivers on the networked machine also?

Does the printer print from other programs but not from Word?

    Thanks
I didn't install the Win7 drivers but have done so now and it did not make any difference. It does not print from any other program either

The only other things I can think of are:

Is file and print sharing on?

is it set as the default printer?

Other than that I am not sure what else to look at.

Yes, and yes - I may have stumbled across a solution in changing the port to TCP/IP
    I'll let you know

Got the answer to the dilemma - on the laptop (Win7)

    Go to Devices and Printers
    Add a printer
    Add a local printer
Create a NEW Port in the add printer wizard from the control panel
Select LOCAL port (unless your printer is networked printer with an IP address then chose TCPIP port
Enter the XP network name or IP address
    Install the Win 7 driver

Works like it did before so this thread is finally closed!!!! :):):):)
