My system starts up and looks ok but I can't start any programs until I CTRL-ALT-DEL and select the task manager, then everything runs ok.

    Win 7 Home Premium SP 1 32-Bit
    3GB RAM
    Intel E4600

    Mike ...

Unfortunately, I have no solution for your problem, but here's a suggestion that will make your life "slightly" easier. :)

The Gnomes of Redmond love to make our lives more difficult with each new version of Windows, and Win7 is a prime example. CTRL-ALT-DEL used to open the Task Manager directly, but that's no longer true.

Instead, CTRL-SHIFT-ESC will bypass the screen opened by CTRL-ALT-DEL and take you right to the Task Manager.

Right clicking an empty space on the Taskbar and left clicking "Start Task Manager" works, too.

For troubleshooting purposes, have you tried other keyboard commands before opening Task Manger to see if it's only Task Manager that "wakes up" Windows? For example, the Windows key alone to open the Start Menu? Or, the Windows Key and R key combination to open the Run box?

Has it always been this way or is this a recent anomaly? If recent, I suggest the following:

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.
