    Hello,

this is my first message ever on this BBS, and I'm a PC-beginner, so bear with me. Everytime I startup my laptop, I get a small screen asking to set the size of the paging file (go to control panel > system > advanced system settings > advanced > performance > advanced : this is the screen I get every time).
Changing the values for the paging file size is possible, but these parameters are apparantly reset to zero every time at start-up, and the screen reappears. The strange thing is I have two identical laptops, where one does not display this screen, and has a non-zero paging file.
What can I do ? (I have googled this for hours but to no avail).
    Thanks for all your feedback.

Hi Pierre, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Don't worry about setting the size of the paging file manually. Let Windows manage the paging file.

To do this, click Start< Control Panel< System< Advanced System Settings< Advanced Tab< Under Performance click Settings< Advanced Tab< Under Virtual Memory click the Change button. Make sure your harddrive is selected and then click the System Managed Size button. Once thats done click the Set button. Now click on ok on all the windows to close them. Now reboot the computer.

Agree with Evan. Let Windows manage it.

Thanks for the reply, but... this is exactly what I have been doing dozens of times, but the system doesn't keep my input. Does this have anything to do with 'authority' (or permissions or ...) ?

You may have something eating it up. Malware/Spyware or something else. Have you set it then don't do anything else and reboot?

Yes : check two boxes in that panel and restart right away : the panel reappears without the values I have set ?

Whatever the message you are getting, Windows is NOT generating it. Windows error messages are very generic. You may get a Virtual Memory is Low kind of warning, but its the first time I have heard that Windows is telling you what to do & how to do it.

I would check for malware as already suggested.

"automatically manage paging file size for all drives" and "system managed size" : I guess those two have to be checked, but whenever I do that and restart the pc, they are unchecked again (while "no paging file" is rechecked). When I input custom sizes in MB, these are also erased after restart.

Thanks for the suggestion, but this seems to sophisticated for me : I don't want to mess up even more of my pc. I have checked which programs run at start-up, but they all look very 'official' to me (Microsoft, Dell, Intel,...).
