Hi Marsha Lynn, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Try following these steps to help make the computer run faster and more efficiently:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Uninstall a Progam and uninstall any programs that you don't use.
    2. In Control Panel under Programs and Features click the link that says Turn Windows Features On or Off and uncheck all the checkboxes except for Games, Internet Explorer 9, Media Features, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1, Windows Gadget Platform, Windows Search, XPS Services and XPS Viewer. Click Ok when you are done. (If you use a Windows Feature that is listed then don't uncheck its checkbox)
    3. Download and run ATF Cleaner. Save the program to your desktop. Right click it and select Run as Administrator. When it opens select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button. Download it from here, ATF Cleaner.
    4. Run Disk Cleanup. Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Right click Disk Cleanup and select Run as Administrator. Once Disk Cleanup finishes calculating how much space it can free up make sure that all the checkboxes are selected. Once all of those checkboxes are selected click the More Options tab and under System Restore and Shadow Copies click the Cleanup button. Click Clean up to delete all of the old System Restore points. Once thats done click the Ok button to perform the requested actions and click Yes when prompted to allow Disk Cleanup to remove unnecessary files on the computer.
    5. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    6. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag. Make sure to uncheck any toolbars in the installtion wizard as they are not needed. After the installation finishes right click on the program and select Run as Administrator. When you open the program click on Settings< Defrag Priority and select High Priority. Then click on Settings< Program Settings< Algorithms Tab. Select the Delete temporary files before defragmenting checkbox and select the Move system files to the beginning on the disk checkbox. When done click Ok to close the Settings window. When you are ready to start the defragmentation process select the small down arrow next to the word Defrag and select Defrag and Optimize. The process could take a long time so please be patient. Download it from here, Auslogics Disk Defrag.
    7. Download and run Quicksys RegDefrag. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted open the regular folder. Run the QRegDefrag.exe program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as Administrator. When the program opens click the Defrag Registry button and then click the Analyze button. When the process finishes analyzing click the Defrag button followed by clicking the Restart button to finish the registry defrag process. Download it from here, QuickSys RegDefrag.
    8. Download and run Autoruns. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted open the regular folder. Run the autoruns.exe program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as Administrator. When you open the program click the Logon Tab and then highlight and remove any programs that you don't need to startup with your computer.
    9. Could you let me know what security programs you have installed and if you have Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed or if you are on Vista if you have Windows Vista Service Pack 2 installed?
    10. How many processes are running in Task Manager?

Let me know if the computer is any faster after performing the above steps. :)

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    So far..

I really appreciate the list of things to do to clean up the computer.

I have completed the first 7 steps...but I have a couple of questions.

Where do I download Autoruns from?

How do I determine if I have Windows Vista Service Pack 2?

There is some improvement but booting up still takes a long time and accessing the internet browser and web sites seems to go very slowly.

Hopefully once I get through all of your points it will show significant improvement.

Again your help has been great...I'm sure I've made some head way with cleaning this system up.

However, I no longer consider myself experienced but rather 'dumb as a dog'...LOL

    Have a great day,

    Phil (Marsha's worst half)

    Download Autoruns.

Right click on Computer->Properties. On the main page you could see the status of Vista.

Great. One other thing I forgot to mention is that you can also disable the Windows Aero Interface if you don't care about all of the glass effects and clear borders for a speed improvement. Disable Aero on Windows 7 or Vista.

In my first post I forgot to include the link to download Autoruns for you. Looks like rsinfo already provided a working link. When you open Autoruns and click on the Logon Tab you will be able to delete and modify which items you want to start up with the computer which will lead to a faster system startup time.

    System Details

I don't mean to sound stupid (but sometimes I really can't help it.)

However, I looked at my system details and the information that I had entered Wednesday appears to be there.

Is their something I left out or something else I need to do.

Thanks for all help I am getting.

That gives us a basic outline of the system.

You've been asked to complete your System Details 2 or 3 times, I suggest you start by completing that task.

Having 86-89 processes is still alot of processes running. Did you remove any programs that you no longer need and did you use the Autoruns program to remove programs that you don't want to run on startup?

I still don't know what security software is installed on the machine. If you have a question on whether you can remove certain programs from your computer feel free to ask.

Lets see what processes are actually running on your system. Download and run Process Explorer from here. Extract the contents of the folder and then right click the procexp.exe program and click Run As Administrator. After it opens see if you can pinpoint any processes that you don't need running and find out which ones are taking up most of the CPU usage.

After you have monitored the processes in Process Explorer click File< Save As and save the ProcessXP text file to your desktop.

Open the text file and copy and paste the results here in your next reply with the number of processes the computer is running.

The info is in the wrong place. Any time someone wants to know they would have to find the post above.

We have a good system that shows your systems specs in every post (you can see mine to the left under My System, so again I suggest you follow the instructions to correctly supply that information.
