At least that's the error message I'm getting. This is from a Dell Inspiron 6400. One day it stopped being able to open a browser wirelessly. It does connect. It shows good signal strength. It opens a browser fine when an ethernet cable is attached, but wirelessly, it won't do it. I notice that the wireless connection is disappearing intermittently as well. Every conceivable setting has been messed with. There were a few moments where it worked all of a sudden, then it wouldn't. I feel like the person I let use this contracted a virus that may have upset the registry. I'm talking beyond my competence here. WINSOCK was run, everything.

Got this in a PM. Maybe somebody can help them. Don't know why they won't post in the Malware section like I asked them to.

Many virus/malware programs have been run. A couple of microsoft techs ran a couple of their own choice as well. One was Viper I remember. I had them Easy Assist and they couldn't figure it out.

I read this on Microsoft Tech:

Click Start, click Run, type Msinfo32, and then click OK.
Expand Components, expand Network, and then click Protocol.
You will have ten sections under Protocol. The section headings will include the following names if the Winsock2 key is undamaged:
    MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]
    MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]
    RSVP UDP Service Provider
    RSVP TCP Service Provider
    MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
    MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
    MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
    MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
    MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
    MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...

If you have a third-party add-on installed, the name of the add-on will replace the letters "MSAFD" in the list.

If there are more than ten sections in the list, you have third-party additions installed.

If there are fewer than ten sections, there is information missing.

I have 20 sections on my list. Many of those "MSAFD NetBios..." Don't know what that means though.

I agree the problem could be due to malware.

My suggestion would be to contact the technical support of your ISP. They should be able go through your settings with you to find what DNS setting is causing the problem.

In the mean time run this command from a command prompt: cmd /c ipconfig /all>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$ and post the output of the file here.

Delete the invalid information from the domain suffix list. Open network connections, right click Local Area Connection, select Properties, double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and on the General tab click the Advanced button. Select the DNS tab and remove any listings there.

Arie, I actually remember doing this some time back. I will do it again. But before I do, I'd like to send you a screenshot of the Network Connections. There are quite a few things on there. How do I insert a photo on a post? I see that option on a PM but not a post. Thanks.

I've added a few more screenshots to photobucket. http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x364/Finder5photos/
As far as the Network Connections screenshot is concerned, this was taken while an ethernet cable was attached. To recap, the whole issue is that I cannot open a browser with a wireless connection. Thanks again.

Start by removing the Dell software & let Windows manage your WiFi connection!

Arie, I have no problem with that. I just don't want to uninstall anything I will need again. I'm fairly proficient with PCs, not so much with Dell and all their extra stuff. Did you see the Network Connections photo? What's all the extra jazz?

If you are concerned, go to the Dell website, look up the downloads for your model (best done by using the Service Tag). Download the Dell "Wireless" software in case you need it or, alternatively, find out how to install it from the original Dell installation system (they used to put a folder called Drivers under the C: drive). Anyway, you can be prepared to reinstall the software, but Arie's suggestion of using Windows wireless configuration should work fine, Dell's software is just a connection "manager ".

The system cannot make a connection. Do you only have one firewall? If you have an antimalware suite it probably includes a firewall, if so, make sure Windows firewall is disabled.

I am not familiar with AES encryption, but it says "key absent ". If it has a key/password, you need to put it in. Check that it is trying to connect your network, not somebody else's.

You have to connect to your wireless router/modem so that it can supply your PC with DHCP. You are not getting DHCP.

Couldn't get any of this to make a difference. I initiated PC restore since there are only few personal files on this particular computer easily backed up. It is as good as new now -- after 8 hours of updates. I sincerely appreciate everyone's help.
