Got a Samsung NP-509 Laptop running SP3 XP Pro and has IE8 that currently refuses to pick up Windows Updates.

Either through tools or the control panel or indeed by web search get to the MS Update site and it seems to start but comes up as done but IE8 window is just plain white without the Express or custom options.

Did a lot of Googling this afternoon and tried many options including some folder renaming, Registering processes in the registry - resetting the browser but still the problem persists?

Hi muddyfox, have you tried un-installing IE8 and doing a fresh install? Neil.

Hi muddyfox. Have you tried starting IE8 with no add-ons and seeing if the Microsoft Update site loads?

You could try starting the computer in Safe Mode with Networking and seeing if the site loads properly there.

Still not solved. I have tried the suggestions and also carried out a clean install of Windows Installer and IE8.

What puzzles me is there is no problem with Adobe Reader or any other downloads I have tried it's just Adobe Flash and because that won't run when I select Windows Updates the message at the bottom left of IE8 tells me it's ok but the options to select Express or Custom don't come up.

I'm convinced this is Pop Up related and have added Adobe.com to allow in Pop Up settings and also added it as a trusted site.

Another point of interest being that on my other machines running XP Pro / IE8 when I select Reader or Flash from Adobe.com the download procedure starts and invariably a select box comes up for either Google Toolbar or Macafee Scan. This doesn't happen with this particular machine.

You don't need Adobe flash to run Windows Updates!

    Start with Windows Update Troubleshooter

and/or How to troubleshoot common Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues

Thanks Arie for the much appreciated links and advice. windows Updated seemed to be running ok as they come out from the server. The major issue is with Flash and IE8. I stumbled across the fact that trying a manual run of Windows Updates the normal screen offering the Express or Custom options fails to display and clearly mistakenly assumed this must be due to the fact that from IE8 I have not been able to get Flash to install. It installed today with Firefox and Google Chrome is the up to date version which I believe automatically includes Flash.

As I might have said previously in IE8 theere is no offer of Google Toolbar nor Macafee Scan nor does it pop up asking for an Active x download.

    A really odd situation?

    Thanks Arie.

Malwarebytes identified and took out a single item. That hasn't made any difference yet.

No, but you haven't start working with the Malware specialist yet.

And a rootkit is serious IMNSHO.
