For some strange reason, no matter how I try to download/install the latest version, IT ALWAYS WANTS TO OVERWRITE my 1.1.18 version! I know everyone is going to say it is impossible, but I cannot get it to do otherwise!!!!!!!!! Is there anyway to download/install Seamonkey ver. 2.xxx to a CD and use it from there? Or can I get it on a CD and use it that way from the start??? Or would someone to try to prove to me that the install path for 1.1.18 and ver.2.0.14 cannot interfere with each other, even if the download/install itself says it will?????

    John,

You can run SeaMonkey from a CD by obtaining the portable version from Portable Apps at:... http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/seamonkey_portable

Regarding SM 1.XX and SM 2.XX being on the same computer I can only say "there is absolutely no reason why up can't have both SM 1.1.18 and SM 2.XXX on your computer."

Far as I know, It is a matter of changing the installation path and installing them in different and separate folders during the install process.

If I was doing it I would first use Windows Explorer and create a folder named 1-SM200 directly off the root of C Drive and the path would look like this.

    C:\1-SM200

During the install process of SM 2.XX I would change the installation path to the folder of 1-SM200

Please understand I am a little Unorthodox and seldom do things the Bill Gates way.

On my computer, the actual path is C:\2-NET\SM-200 for SM 2.XX and C:\2-NET\SM-119 for SeaMonkey 1.1.19 AND yes I have Firefox in C:\2-NET\FIREFOX as well as C:\2-NET\T-BIRD for Thunderbird along with a few others.

In other words, all my Internet Related Programs are installed in Sub-Folders to 2-NET

I do this because I don't like wading through a lot of other programs to get where I'm going.

I preface a lot of my folders with numbers because Windows sorts with numbers 1st and letters 2nd and this way I keep stuff lined up in the tree to suit me.

In this case the internet folders are at the top of the stack along with C:\1-MAINT which is where all the program are installed for maintaining the computer i.e. SpyBoy - Adware - Defrag etc. etc.

I have been doing this sort of thing since Windows 3.1 without problems

AND I have had both SM 1.XX and SM 2.XX installed this way every since SM 2.0 came out.

However, I urge everyone to do it their way or the default way and not mine unless they fully understand my madness.

My 2 Cents and Good luck - Ray

I don't remember what happened when I had both SM1.1.x and 2.0.x. I believe that I installed, SM 2, even before it left the beta step, wherever it wanted, and had no problem. I know, for a fact, that if one browser is considered to be obsolete, there will be a tendency to "overwrite ", or, at least remove the older version. In such case, a Custom install should be selected, and a new folder entered in place of the default one. This is, pretty much, what The Old Chief said. It is nice that SM2 has a different location, from SM1.1 for its profile.
It is tougher with programs like Firefox, which tend to use each other's profiles, thus making a mess.
I have, also, SM2.1 RC1, I think, which was installed in a folder of its own, and, on top, it needed its own profile.
Sometimes, it is tough to get things right, like when I tried to install Firefox 5 beta2, which should be the next final version, when testing is complete.
That stupid thing tried elbowed its way and overwrite the latest stable version, even replacing the shortcut. I, finally, tamed the beast.
At this point, I have two Seamonkeys (I got rid of 1.1.19), and four Firefoxes. It can be done, but you have to be vigilant.

actually, another option would be to download and run the zipped version of SeaMonkey 2. There's no installing needed. Just unzip it somewhere, and run seamonkey.exe and its up and running.

To All who are trying to help: 1.1.18 is already installed and I tried to find the install path for it, to no avail. So, how do I make a different install path for Ver. 2.xxx? Secondly, my Windows Explorer will NOT allow me to make that new folder, with any : Or \ symbols in it!

    John,

You don't put the : or the \ in the folder name because that is already there.

You high light the C:\ with Windows Explorer and and then name the new folder 1-SM200 or anything else you like and then a sub folder will be created off of C:\ and the full complete path will then be C:\1-SM200 or what ever the name is you choose.

The SM 1.1.18 version should be located in the path of C:\Program Files and then in a sub-folder named SeaMonkey if I recall the default name correctly.

But, you don't need to do anything with the current installation of SM 1.1.18

Just install SM 2.XX in the folder as suggested or another folder some place so long as they are located and named differently.

Well, sabotaged again! I made a seperate folder for ver. 2.0.14 and then installed it, when it finished I tried to see if I could still use my 1.1.18 AND NO MATTER WHAT I DID, I KEPT GETTING VER. 2.0.14! So, I uninstalled that version through the add/remove software and the LOUSY PROGRAM TOOK MY 1.1.18 WITH IT! Ironically, in the add/remove software, 1.1.18 still shows, but I cannot access it?? Do any of you know where I can get the download for 1.1.18, as I am sure the data are still there if I can get the program back?

John, A Download for SM 1.1.18 is at this link: http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/1.1.18

Downloads for all older versions is here http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/#old

I am beginning to think you may have something going on with Quick Launch.

I have forgot exactly where but, sometime during the install process it ask if you want to use Quick Launch and this should be unchecked when running 2 different version of SeaMonkey

I went round and round with Quick Launch back in 2008 when regardless of the Icon I clicked on the same version of SeaMonkey would load because Quick Launch was in Memory.

A link to read that posting is here: http://www.windowsbbs.com/firefox-t...amonkey-installed-only-one-version-loads.html

If SeaMonkey is loading immediately after you click on the desktop Icon, You may have to right click on the desktop icon and select properties and force Profile Manager to load by adding after the load command a space and then -profilemanager I have explained how to do that at this link:... http://www.raysmyth.net/dunce/19-sm119/04-pfile.html

Once The profile manager is loaded uncheck the box where it says "Don't Ask at Start Up" if the box is checked.

My Memory is a little vague on this because it has been over 2 years since my fight with Quick Launch and how it was effecting me having 2 version of SM installed and back then it was between 1.1.9 and 1.1.12

Hope this is what's going on in your case and explains your problem

    Ray

Have you looked in Task Manager to see if SeaMonkey is loaded in memory when it is not suppose to be.

I think I've about run out of ideas but, it is strange I have never had any trouble having two version installed and Fact is, I have had up to 3 version installed at same time plus Netscape 7.2 which uses the same profiles as does SeaMonkey 1.X

I will say, Ray, that you have given the most thorough answers I've ever read on this forum. Very informative and thank you. I also have had several versions running at the same time without issues so it sounds like something else is going on in John's installation.

    in SM 2 its C:\program files\seamonkey, but in SM 1 its C:\program files\mozilla.org\seamonkey

when I first installed SM 2, it did take over the SM 1 start up icons and made itself the default automatically. But it never tried to install itself in the same directory as SM 1 [thats a new one on me]. Furthermore, others, elsewhere, have reported the same or similar problem. For me, I solved it by uninstalling SM 2, reinstalling SM 1, made it the default, and went to the zipped version for SM 2. Works great. No installation needed whatsoever.

I have had the take over of the shortcut with Firefox5 beta. The solution was simple. It is to rename the shortcut, e.g the Seamonkey 1.1.19, to SM1.1.9, and the Seamonkey 2 shortcut to SM2.0 whatever. The take over occurs only when the shortcut is named the way it was originally.

Have managed to Install Version 2.2 of SeaMonkey

To All: Despite all my problems that I Had before, I managed to install, on one of my computers, the upgrade to version 2.2 of SeaMonkey, over my older version, without any difficulties! For some reason, this version IS backward compatible and WILL completely import all original data and information from the older version. Ironically, because of my past comments, I cannot access the newsgroup for SeaMonkey, except to read it! I was going to try and compliment Mr. Kaiser but I guess that is not going to happen!:) Thanks to all for the comments and please pass on to Mr. Kaiser my compliments!

I don't know if this was said, in its entirety. If you want to use both v.1.x and 2.x, you will need a Custom Install for the newer version. Since I started this business even before the final version of 2.x came out, I made a point to create a new profile for each version. However, by default, 2.x's profile is located in a different location as 1.x.
1.x is in C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\Profiles, while 2.x is in C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles. Note that the only difference is mozilla.org vs. Mozilla.

I spoke to soom! It seems that, whether I want it to or not, SeaMonkey forces upgrades on its users, and in doing so it did cause me a loss of ALL the download dialog box! I did not want that to happen on my second computer, and, now have no way to get that info back! I would like to know if one can transfer ALL bookmarks from SeaMonkey to IE8? If so, how?

I must have addressed this issue dozens of times, here and at other newsgroups. Seamonkey, Firefox and Thunderbird will update, by default, but no one forces you to keep those settings. Preferences|Software Installations|uncheck what you don't want.
I never allow the browser to update, although I choose to do it when I am ready, I never saw
. I don't even know what it is.
I don't use IE8, intentionally, but you should be able to import the bookmarks from Seamonkey, by locating them in the Profile.
