    Hi,

I am trying to boot Linux from an external USB Hard Disk Seagate Freeagent Go 500 GB. It installs alright and is also set to be bootable but will not run Linux. My current setup is Windows Vista on the internal HDD.

When I exit the setup, it hangs on a prompt ( _ ) when trying to boot. Wondering if it is possible to boot off an external storage device at all.
    Any clues or resolutions ?

    cheers

That could be the issue depending on your BIOS, I'd advise you to complete your system details and be aware this is a Windows forum. I'm not saying you won't get help here but perhaps a linux forum would be more suitable?

    This is a BIOS issue.

In order to boot from any USB device your system BIOS must support that capability. If your system BIOS supports it, you must access the BIOS at boot and enable USB booting functionality.

Many BIOS also have a F key to get a disk boot menu. If yours has such that option select your external drive in the menu and Linux will boot.

If your BIOS cannot boot external USB devices then you're SOL.
