I have a Toshiba laptop (Windows XP SP3) about 7 years old. It is so virus infected that I don't seem to be able to recover. I have a disk labeled "TOSHIBA Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD ". Can I use this to restore the laptop back to like it was when new and it be virus free? I've never had to do this on any computer before. If this is supposed to work, any hints/suggestions.

    Thanks

Yes, this DVD will restore your system to the point it was as new HOWEVER as it's 7 years old are you sure there are no faults in the DVD (this could cause serious problems if so)...

You will also lose all your data and programs installed since then...

I'd advise reading this post and following the instructions ask in the Malware and Virus Removal board to see if the experts can clean your computer

When you say no faults, do you mean am I sure that the disk is readable. I'm assuming that it is...it is still sealed in the shrink wrap, never been opened. I will look into trying the suggestions you offered. I do realize that by using the recovery disk, that I will lose all programs and data. All data is backed up so that's not a problem. I have the install disks for most of the software. Thanks for your reply.

Hi again Ed, yes that's exactly what I mean :)

I still suggest you follow my advice and use the recovery disc as a last resort.

I'll give that a try then. May take a while. I would like to be able to devote an extended length of time with few interruptions. I'll post back when I can.

    Thanks

No problem, if nothing else it'll be a learning experience and you may discover how to prevent these issues before they happen rather than sweeping everything under the rug until the next time ;)
