    Hi forum,
my computer was seriously infected and broni helped my with that. Now my computer is without infection but my updateproblems still remains and a new one spawn out of cleaning my PC. Vista themed taskbar and start menu and generally windows explorer windows look awful. And the my computer wont update and SP2 has catastrophic errors. I have captured a few pictures about the apparence and color scheme and update problems and fails here: wtff.yolasite.com . I noticed that some updates do install successfully but only microsoft office updates do. The crucial vista updates all fail.

Food for thought...Often times - doing a fresh install of the operating system when you have a large number of problem is better and faster...

Can you borrow a disc, bearing in mind it must be the same version of Vista as you have the Product Key for. I would suggest uninstalling the SP's and starting from scratch.

Lots of the PC's now come with a "D" drive/partition which is actually what "C" drive looked like when you took it out of the box. It is a Recovery partition. Usually it will nag you to make a backup copy of it when you boot up the PC. Takes so many CD's or DVD's.

Yes, but as I said, for your 'Product Key' to work, you must use the same version as the one you have on your system. It should be written on the 'Product Key' sticker somewhere on your PC, or right click MyComputer and click properties it will tell you the version.

Do you have discs for Office? If not you should know that a clean install will wipe everything off your hard drive (take back ups of any important files). I you want to keep the Office installation then the following instructions will allow you to do a Repair install that will leave everything else intact. Obviously there is no guarantee that other files have not been damaged by the infections.

MrBill's suggestion would be a good one if you have the Restore discs (which I guess you don't) but there is every chance that the Recovery Partition has been damaged even if you have one.

If you have the Office disc with the product key then a fresh install of the OS would be the most reliable way forward. Just insert the disc, reboot and follow the prompts, it should all be self explanatory.

Please ask if you have any doubts.

That's a good start. All your required drivers will be obtainable from the internet to download, most should come from the manufacturers site.

Heres a cut from the link: "If you have a OEM Recovery Vista installation DVD that came preinstalled with your OEM brand computer instead, then it will most likely only be a clone of the hard drive with Vista allowing you to only do a clean install with it instead. These OEM computers often have a Recovery D:\ partition that does the same thing as the OEM Recovery Vista installation DVD." I looked though D:\ and theres no such clone. And i havnt got the disc. Is it possible for me to download it somewhere?

You said here you had the Vista Home Premium disc. So, why are you asking about a Recovery disc, you don't need it.

OK, first, there is a chance that you do have a recovery partition on your hard drive, it is hidden so you would not be able to see it. Click Start, click Programs, and look for 'Acer Recovery Management' if it is there open it and click on 'Restore System To Default Factory Settings'. Fingers crossed, this will work but there is no guarantee that the Recovery Partition is undamaged.

Second choice, you can go to this page and see if you can get the recovery discs.

If this all fails you can use a borrowed copy of Vista but it will need to match the version you have the licence key for. There is no legal way to obtain a download of the OS so you may have to buy a copy.

Hi Sandis. You will end up having to buy Windows 7 Home Premium for your system. Since you going to format and install Windows 7 make sure you backup all of your important data before you format the harddrive.
