I would leave it running, Chkdsk can take a long time (hours) to complete and it should reach a conclusion.

The final thing you can do is to get the diagnostics for your hard drive as discribed in the last few posts.

You could also follow my suggestions in post 18 to save your important files.

    Hi Mark,

OK it has been running 6 hrs since I posted and no change. I wont touch it for the night I guess, but thinking its not going to move any further.

I will try getting the diag for the drive and post it too.

Thanks so much for your help!! :)

That's a shame. But as your hard drive still seems to have some functionality you should be able to get your old files off with the software from the link in post 18.

I doubt if it will work but you could then try and do a full installation of Vista.

It appears your hard drive has failed but you can only really be sure by downloading the diagnostics program from the manufacturer. Your computer specs lists three possible manufacturers so you will have to remove the drive to get the make.

Yes you are on the right track. You need to get the diagnostics listed for Dos (CD) and burn it as an ISO image. When you click on your choice of download it takes you to another page, select the ISO version of the download, full instruction are on that page for burning it to disc.

I am still in the dark as to what your computer is, name and model, desktop or laptop:).

:eek:I just noticed the end of your post where you just told me it is a laptop and you had given me the details in a previous post (got confused with other threads) and I didn't fully answer your questions. Yes you need to boot from the diagnostics disc.

not sure if I did it right. The cd I burned is in and is running "windows diagnostics memory tool" is the correct? I didnt see any of the options listed in the instructions though.. ???

oh gosh! it finished that and went right to startup repair again :( this is where is runs for days. Should I let it run again... forever? I think I did something wrong.

No, you should get Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)

The page above also includes instructions on how to use the software.

:confused:Something went wrong there, although that is good news its booted up :).

It sounds to me as if windows continued to repair itself. If the diagnostics disc had run it would have just finished with a list of results.

You either burned the disc wrong or had not set the boot order for the CD drive, or there is some very strange behaviour going on:confused:.

I am beginning to wonder if all of the trouble has been due to a Virus. If, and that is a big IF, you have had a virus on the hard drive it would be very wise to check it is clean before you start moving files to the external hard drive. Go to the Malware & Virus forum and follow the instructions.

Hopefully it is clean and then you can transfer all your files (17,000 pics ) to the external drive.

After that I would try and run the diagnostics again. If you did burn it as an iso image and had set the boot order for CD drive first it should have done its job and you would have seen its menu.

If the test gives it the all clear you could continue to use it but I would be cautious and get a new drive as soon as it is convenient.

If you need any more help I will be happy to assist:)

Let me know how you get on.

    Mark.

    Hi Mark,

I dont know what happened. It sure is hard to explain this stuff on a forum but poor you for trying to follow ;) I did burn as ISO image and I def set it to boot from the cd. I just didnt see all the instruction choices. I saw windows vista as the operating system, and had to choose repair, but that was all. It for sure ran the cd program.

I did see one error when it started up it was a box and said:

    ERROR

    Exception Assertion!
    File=.\Location\xmlparser.cpp
    Line=50
    program exiting

I did think of a virus too. And why I didnt want to move all the files in case. I did my Norton update and ran a full scan, it didnt seem to find anything.

Its weird that this originally happened when I turned the computer on with the ex drive plugged in, that is the only thing that was different than any other start up. ???

I am going to run the cd again and see what happens.

I am quite certain, and this is backed up by Arie, that the diagnostics software would have displayed its name when it booted up. When it boots from the diagnostics disc it does not load the Vista operating system, it loads its own operating system so that it can still operate even if the hard drive is totally dead. Not seeing the diagnostics menu is a sure sign that your computer had not booted from the diagnostics disc.

Perhaps you could try booting with the diagnostics disc in another computer just to be sure that it works. Why are you so sure that the diagnostics ran, if you didn't see the menu you could not have selected a process for it to perform. The repair option you saw is not on the diagnostics disc it would have been from the Vista OS on your hard drive.

When you set the boot order in the bios did you SAVE before you selected exit. (An easy mistake to make)

Hmmm, Well I guess I am saying I am sure because it was a different screen than any other time, and never would go past repair screen when I booted regular every time before, and I knew for sure I did boot from cd and f10 save. I am going to try again... just to see :) I'll report back after.

As you obviously have access to another PC I would try my suggestion to run the diagnostics disc in it and see what happens. This should prove the diagnostics disc works, or not:). As I said, if it is doing what it should its menu will appear and you will have to select an option before it continues. At the moment it isn't doing this so something is wrong:confused:

Just one quick question, is your computer showing the correct time and date?

Yes the date and time is correct :)

The computer is working, I have deleted some emails and files. I can get on the net, so I am going to download the diag and run it right in the computer now, instead of the cd.

    OK Mark...

Sorry I forgot that yes I did have access to another computer :)

Now here is what I did on my laptop. I was able to get on the net, but some setting for browsing must be wrong, I can log in to email (yahoo and msn) or a website (bank, cc sites) but I cant change pages, it just sits. Thats just fyi stuff I noticed while I was checking how it worked now.

So, now I downloaded to diag software and was able to see the menu and follow the directions as stated on the site :) I did a quick test on the drive and it came back "pass" so now I am running the extened test... it is going as we speak. It will be a while for this one :) so far nothing bad is happening :D I will post when its done.

The other test I ran from the CD before did look similiar to this, but this one showed everything exactly as the directions :)

OK I did extended test and it passed!!! no errors :) My Norton did a full sweep too. So now I am going to check the forum for malware & virus scans.

The only thing not working is the internet pages that I believe have pop ups, like my bank, I can get on, sign in, and there is pop up that I should ok, but it wont bring me to it. I set my active X to enable and default on internet settings. What does that sound like is happening??

Very pleased that your PC has made a good recovery and in view of all the odd behaviour I quite agree with Arie and would recommend a full scan using all the software on the Malware and Virus forum. The problem on line could be caused by malware.
