I think I had a Virus. I had to run an XP SP2 Disc to repair the XP. Since That, I get "Disc Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter ". At Startup I put the SP2 Disk in CD Drive and press enter. The Bootup then happens. I Ran an SP3 Application from Microsoft. It did not help. I hope someone can help me.

A repair is NOT going to remove the virus. The virus has most probably overwritten your boot record. It would be best if you could backup data & reinstall after formatting your hard disk.

Scan removed the Virus. Boot.ini is the same as it was. I know this because I have 2 Boot.in backups in 2 different places. I repaired Win XP. I need to know how to get rid of "Disc Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter "

Check in the BIOS that the Hard Drive is detected.

Check in BIOS that the boot order is correct - set first option to hard drive and test.

Hard Drive can be set to detect, and when I reboot it goes back to CD first. I also noticed that IE shortcut is left on the Quick Launch, then I reboot and it moves to right. Also TweakUI is set to autoload my name at bootup. After Bootup I have to click my name to do a Bootup. I have never seen such crazy things before.

That strange behaviour may well be due to malware and I suggest you head over to the Malware & Virus Removal forum for a checkup.

Please read this as indicated at the head of the forum and post the logs requested in a new thread.

I have one anti virus application in place at all times. I downloaded updates and ran a scan with it. Nothing. I did the same thing with another anti virus. I did the same thing with anti malware applications. Each anti virus and malware application has one installed. The others are on the shelf. I have never used Malware and Virus Remover Forum. I checked what is required of me, and I am not sure that is for me. In fact I am not sure I can use it.

The procedure in the Malware & Virus Removal forum is straightforward - it is only a case of downloading DDS as instructed, runnin it and posting the contents of the 2 logs.

Antivirus software has it's limitations and is by no means guaranteed to catch or detect everything.

It's your call of course :)

Today I reloaded XP with the 9 disks I got from Compaq. They got rid of everything but the operating system. The only thing that is still here is "Disc Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter ". I keep trying to get rid of it, but no luck. I will have a look at The "Malware & Virus Removal forum" again.

Hard Drive is WDC WD1600AAJB-56WRA0, Serial No. WD-WCA52C079021 160 GB. I just ran DLGDiag for Windows. It passed.

Have you checked the Boot Order and Boot Priority in BIOS?

Reading your previous post #5 I would try setting the BIOS to default setting and replacing the CMOS battery.

If this fails to resolve the issue I would suspect a corrupted BIOS as a possible cause.

I found 8 Problems with Spybot. Should I Remove Problems, one at a time and try a Reboot to see if I still need Boot Disk.

Type 'repair win xp boot record' into your search engine. You should then be able to find instructions on using the Win xp installation disc repair facility to fix your boot record. Its done with the instruction 'fixmbr'.

Even if this does not fix the problem it will eliminate it from the list of possible causes.

Failling this, as PeteC has suggested it might be the bios, something I have never messed with so perhaps PeteC can help you further.

All but one are tracking cookies and are harmless - the objection to them is that they can be said to invade your privacy - they will return as you surf.

Removing them will not affect your boot issue.

Micrisoft Windows Changed Settings would appear to be an advisory from Spybot - see ....

I placed the reply in here. I do not know what happened. Here goes. I went to the BIOS. I had the BIOs set to Hard Drive first and CD Drives Second and third for several Years. I found that CD Drives were set now to First and Second. I do not know how they got that way. I changed back to Hard Drive First. Now I do not need Boot Disk to Startup. I changed to CD Drive First, Hard Drive Second, and CD Drive Third. It still works. This is why it is marked Resolved. Another problem cured by the people at BBS. Thanks a lot.
