My friends have a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop XP Home SP3 using Avast AV, Firefox, ZoneAlarm and AT&T aircard. After the latest Windows update, there is no response from Firefox on the internet nor from IE 7 either. The AT&T connection manager shows a good strong signal for connection.
-Avast was able to update after 2 hours of attempting to download update files.
-A ZoneAlarm update file was able to be downloaded in about 1 hour.
    -Normal internet browsing cannot occur.

-ZoneAlarm was shutdown and Windows firewall was activated but connection browsing with Firefox still could not be achieved.

-System restore to the day before the Windows update was performed but that did not cure the problem.

-Windows update of 9 files occurred again but the situation remains the same.

What can be done to restore internet browsing????

Delete the updates that it just got. Also seen virus and malware do the same thing. Programs that update thru themselves have no problem. Been there done that. Download MalwareBytes to a thumb drive and run it before you remove the updates.

    http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?cdlPid=10997763

    * DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version if one is available. There are always new updates to the definitions.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then choose the drive(s) then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected if malware is found.
    * When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can be retrieved by opening up MBAM and clicking on the Logs Tab at the top of the program .

    Reboot the computer

Please be advised that my friends and the disabled system are 3000 miles away from me and I've been helping them via phone so some requests may not be possible.

The system is also running Superantispyware; the problem was caused by Windows updates.

They don't have a thumb drive and most likely won't be able to download anything.

And you know this because ....

This problem could be very well caused by a Malware infection brought to light by a Windows Update, because the update *disabled* the Malware access point in some compromised code.

I doubt we can help in this situation.

When the unit was in my area some time ago, I installed Superantispyware on it.

There is a note about free support for windows update problems on Microsoft help page that I'm referring them to; otherwise, they probably have to take it to a computer shop.

    Thanks for response.

    That doesn't guarantee anything

Yup, you'll have to call Microsoft for that.

When they boot the computer, they have to wait for Superantispyware to load before doing anything else so it is still active. The bug icon appears on their task bar.

Because my friends AT*T wireless phone was having problems, my friends took their computer, with AT*T aircard, to AT*T shop also and it turns out that that was the whole problem! Something to do with the aircard.
Just a coincidence that the last thing that happened was windows updates installation.
