I have read so many conflicting reports on just how much RAM windows vista utilizes. I have a laptop running vista home premium 64bit and will upgrade in the next few weeks to windows 7 pro 64bit. My laptop has currently 4 gigs RAM and I had thought about upgrading to 8 gigs. I run alot of big programs at a time, Dreamweaver, Flash, Microsoft Visual Studio, Fireworks...stuff like that, and it seems to tax my system somewhat. Also, I have had good experiences with third party RAM such as Kingston and others in the past. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If this is your main system it would be helpful if you add your system details to your profile. Please click on the link and follow those instructions it could save some time when resolving this or further issues.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile

If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above :)

Since you're running 64Bit memory usage shouldn't be a problem (I recommend crucial.com), physical expansion maybe an issue though hence the request for system specs.

The maximum amount of RAM that can be utilized in:
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit is 16 GB
But your actual computer maximum allowed installed RAM may be much less.

The maximum amount of RAM that can be utilized in:
    Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit is a whopping 192 GB
Again, your actual computer maximum allowed installed RAM may be much less.

This information has come from here: Memory Limits for Windows Releases

The forum is Powered by vBulletin, it cannot be changed by a "web designer "
The only change can be done by vBulletin themselves with new releases.
Each forum can also elect to what they add to their forum but only from what is available at vBulletin and their current revision

The User Control Panel seems to work well for online forums, generally most are happy with this.
You can ask at vBulletin Support for new suggestions and additions ;)

Currently this forum uses Version 3.8.4 but an upgrade to 4.0 is available

    Oh ok  :)

Anyway, has the above info helped with the "conflicting reports" that you were given?
By the way, using Internet Explorer you can find all your HP details by clicking here: http://h20270.www2.hp.com/ediags/gmn2/index.aspx

Yes thanks for all your help! One more thing. I would welcome suggestion on the best memory brands and specs to upgrade my system. I have found some 4gig sticks priced anywhere from $109 to $189. At almost $200 a stick, it would be hard to swing doubling my 4gigs to 8. I could possibly buy the cheaper 4 gig sticks, but want to make sure that I get the best memory I can to realize the best increase on performance. Crucial recommends the higher priced 8 gig upgrade at $389. Not sure what I should do so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Not all computers allow 4 Gig sticks in each slot
You can check your HP Help and Support in the start menu on this, or download it HERE

If it is not listed in your HP Help and Support, you can contact HP via Chat HERE and ask what the maximum amount of Ram is allowed per channel in your computer.

Someone may have some better hardware info for you, on best choice.
I would normally say go with Crucial's recommendations. Or contact HP ask them.
Although your computer is quoted at 8 Gig max, with 2 Ram slots, I still believe you should chat for free to HP, and confirm this, and what they recommend.
