FF works fine, but IE8 and Chrome cannot get online.
Chrome says, "Webpg not available" - which can't be - it's Altavista.
IE says, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpg" - again not possible, since it's my email (identical to in FF).

    Firewall settings?

I only ask because IE is denied access by my firewall (don't really trust it and some programs use IE no matter what your default browser is set to).

    Hi Bud,
I have Comodo. Can you tell me where to look?
I looked everywhere I could think of yesterday and nothing.

If you look elsewhere, you'll see I've had trouble with comodo and abandoned it...

I'll leave this for other Comodo users to assist :)

Pete, Just went down the list, trying ea method. Got as far as Advanced - Method 4.
It's get a bit deep for me at this point. Can you offer a suggestion?

That is nice, but you'll need to provide feedback.

What error did you received after you tried Method 1? And Method 2... and (you get the idea).

Did you try Advanced Method 1?

Arie, Some of the fixes I'd already tried and typically the result was the same message "Can not display webpg ". I'm running right now, but will respond in detail hopefully tonight.
    Thx :)

    Hi chas,

I read farther down in Pete's link and I don't know if you tried this one:

Method 8: Reset Internet Explorer configuration settings
Caution When you use the Reset All Settings feature in Internet Explorer, you will disable all browser add-ons. Therefore, [you] must re-enable the add-ons that you want to use afterward. Typically, an add-on is not re-enabled when you reinstall it. You must manually re-enable the add-on.

To perform this method, follow these steps:

    1. Start Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
    3. In the Internet Explorer Default Settings dialog box, click Reset.
    4. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
In Internet Explorer 6, click Restore Defaults , and then click OK .
    5. When the settings have been reset, click Close, and then click OK to restart Internet Explorer.

Chris, you won't believe this, but...
Somehow I (apparently) had fragments of IE7&8 - or a corrupted ver of IE8, and I had already tried your suggestion of "Method 8: Reset Internet Explorer configuration settings ", BUT that was before I did the new install of IE8, so when I went down the list (Pete suggested) I went right by that one.
Then after reading your suggestion I realised what I'd done and did the reset again, and voowala - problem solved!
So, if someone can explain this to me, my ears are open.
    Now it gets really strange...
Google Chrome wouldn't get online either, so I thought I'd try to see if it had the same reset option. I went into tools and for some reason didn't notice the reset tab, so I just closed it and tried opening it again, and you guessed it, now it works.
    Can someone explain this???

Arie, I heard what you said earlier about carefully trying and posting results for ea method tried, and would have gone through the list again had Chris's suggestion not solved the problem.

It's as Pete said, you had pieces of IE6, 7, 8 and 7 and 8 (again) and Chrome running around in there and all four were pointing their fingers at each other saying, "That's your job. "

At least that's the technical explanation for it. :p

Pete, this was quite an education.
I had no idea all this could come from some bad files. Let alone how they got corrupted. Something that will never be fully explained, I suppose.
Since I used a reputable program, Revo, for the uninstall, it doesn't make sense.
Nor does it make sense the Aussie, PCB***, thought I should stop using Revo. Any idea why he thought this? It seems contrary to logic. Revo is more thorough than a regular uninstall since it removes the remnants that are left in the registry.
