I am getting a message to increase virtual memory. It occurs when I'm using a program I rarely use and freezes up. I don't know how to do that. Is it a sign of more serious trouble?

It sounds like you have insufficient RAM installed .....

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :)

To increase your virtual memory ......

Right click My Computer icon > Properties > Advanced > Performance - Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory - Change

By default 'System managed size' is selected, but you can set a custom size - usual values are 1.5x installed RAM for Initial and Maximum sizes. If 1.5x RAM is less than the minimum recommended increase it.

Are you running low on hard drive space?

I do not have an icon for my computer but I went to start-programs and selected my computer and local disc C, right clicked - then properties. there is no advanced>performance-settings>advanced>virtual memory-change.
There are only tabs for General - Tools - Hardware - Sharing - Quota
I checked each tab and under Quota I saw enable quota management was not checked, so I checked it. Do not limit disk usage was also checked. So far that's where I am.

Right click on My Computer in Windows Explorer - not on C:\ drive.

I would uncheck quota management - that has no bearing for a single user and keep Do not limit ..... checked.

Would be helpful to know how much RAM you have installed as well as free disk space.

OK i disable disk quotas and found the properties you referred to. total paging is 768 and max is 1536
System managed size and no paging file, both not checked. How should these bet set?

512 Mb RAM is really the minimum for XP to run well and is clearly sufficient for day to day use, but not enough for the program in question.

You may have to experiment with the virtual memory settings, but as a start I would set the max to 2000Mb.

Free space is fine - I wondered if you might be down to the last few Mb :)

    Thanks Pete.
I set max to 2000 and left 768. Is removing some programs or files a good idea?

No, that would serve no purpose as you have plenty of free disk space.

It would be more useful to check that you have no unnecessary programs running at startup and consuming memory.

Starter is a good applet for easily disabling (or re-enabling) startup programs.
